Ah!  I believe it is to prevent clotting too quickly.  Heart failure increases the risk for stroke caused by blood clot (thrombus) formation.  Blood thinners are often prescribed to help reduce this risk.  Finding the right dosage is important so be sure to have routine blood tests to monitor your INR.
