Hi my brother has had a double bypass 3 weeks ago & now has some issues with his memory & general confusion, he asks the most silly questions & also thinks he has been out to places that he has'nt, also stutters quite badly at times is this a known issue with this operation also his blood levels since his release from hospital have dropped by 30% also his ankles and legs are swelling.

any feedback would be appreciated.

Hi. Experts suggest that atherosclerotic brain vessels may have caused poor mental performance after surgery. Although short-term confusion, memory loss and poorer problem solving and information processing are common after bypass surgery, it is temporary and reversible. Most people return to pre-bypass level of function between 2 and 12 weeks after surgery. In addition to mental changes, pain, edema, wound drainage, shortness of breath, fever and fatigue are also common during the first 6 weeks of bypass surgery. However, if symptoms worsen or persist, consult your physician. Hope this helps.
