high triglykerides, low LDL

by dimi379, Jul 15, 2009 03:48AM
I am a 32 years old guy, with normal weight (1.90 height, 90 kg) with a disorder at blood indicators. More specifically the last blood examination shown 577 triglykeridia, 31 HDL, 48 LDL, 194 cholesterol after a diat poor in fett for about a month. My doctor gave me pills (fibrates) that i have to take them every night before go to sleep. My question is: Does the low LDL plays a balance role in relation with the very high indicators of triglykeridia? Shall I pay attention to specific food category? Shall i make more speciflc medical checks? Thanks a lot for you time!
Regards,
Dimitris

High triglycerides can come from eating fat or drinking milk with fat in it.  Drink skim milk and cut back on meat.  I dropped my triglyercides down to 35 by eliminating beef from my diet.  Salmon has omega 3, which is good for the heart.  Fresh vegetables (organic is best) with brown rice.  Oatmeal in the mornings.  If you make diet changes, I am sure that you will see a difference in your blood work within a year.

Thanks for the advice but I actually follow a rigid diet with all you have mentioned above! Don't forget I am a Mediterranean with a healthy diet based on olive oil and fish. My problem is probably hereditary, because i have some relatives (my mum brother and his son) who had severe heart problems, the first died from heart attack and the second did a double by-pass at his 40ies...
What i need to know is the role of LDL in relation with the high number of triglycerides and of course if i can avoid of taking these meds from so early...

Lovasa (high dose fish oil) decreases triglyercides by 45%.  Not sure how much fish oil you can be getting from your diet, but this high dose prescription really works.  Triglyercides are the hardest part of cholesterol to get down.  My uncles have extremely high triglyerides as does my husband.  My husbands is definitely hereditary also in that his parents and brother also have high triglyercides, but my husband and his family also have high LDL levels with low HDL levels.  His doctor said that when the LDL level is high and the HDL level is low, it usually is hereditary either that or he is eating bacon and eggs every day.  Never heard of low LDL and high triglyercides before.

I have heard that a Mediterranean diet is a healthy way to eat and I was thinking about trying it myself.  I eat very little oil, way below what is recommended on the food chart.  So far my blood work looks great, but as I age who knows how  much the cholesterol will go up.  Take care, and I hope you can get those triglyercides down.
