botox for migraines

botox for migraines

Hi, I am a 43 y.o. female with a history of migraine headaches.  I have had these since I was 10 or so.  My only form of treatment has been advil as I am allergic to acetaminophen and my cardiologist is not an advocate of the triptans or imitrex related drugs.  So, I heard that there have been studies of using botox as a treatment for this type of headache.  Since most of my headaches are related to me eating something with monosodium glutamate in it, or certain smells (perfume, etc.), would this type of treatment help in this case?  I do occasionally get a migraine from other sources, but most are caused from the above.  I had a couple of MRI's which showed lesions on the grey matter from migraine activity.  Other than pvc's, occasional svt I am in good health.  I would appreciate any knowlege in this area and if you could explain how the botox works with migraines?  Thanks for your comments

This is really a question for a neurologist.  I use Botox exclusively for cosmetic purposes, but I know a number of patients who have dhad very successful results with its use in trigger points for migraines.
