port wine stain

port wine stain

my daughter has a port wine stain on her right leg and thigh.  the pws covers most of her limb, we have had several doctors look at the pws and all of them say that laser treatment is needed but since it is considered cosmetic surgery our insurance wont cover. my question is how do we get the surgery approved when several doctors say that if left untreated could cause her leg to grow at a different rate plus her skin to thicken? and why is it considered cosmetic when it can cause deformities of the limb?

You can appeal the insurance company! I've had to do that a couple times for my own surgery for a vascular birthmark, since they call it "cosmetic" when it really isn't. Also have the doctor get in on this, and have them write down that this is not a cosmetic procedure and that it needs to be done. Then you can send that paper to the insurance company as well. At the website, birthmark.org, there is a section where it tells you specifically how to appeal the insurance company. good luck.
