post cheek bone surgery

I had my left zygomatic arch repaired 2 weeks ago.  since the surgery the range of motion of my jaw has decreased to the point I can only fit one finger in my mouth.  If I try to force my jaw open it is agonizing.  I called my surgeon's office and they told me to put warm compresses on the muscle and try to work the jaw open with my fingers.  I've been doing that but it doesn't seem to be helping and the pain is the same.  Is this a temporary thing and I just haven't waited long enough or do I really need to force the jaw open like forcing the flexure of a repaired acl to bend the knee.
Thanks!
