How long will my hematoma last?

by bjjcompetitor, Oct 30, 2009 12:51PM
about 10 days ago i fell on my lower back and butt while walking down some stairs. the pain wasnt that bad so i went and trained jiu jitsu. i rolled on my back a few times just to warm up and within 5 minutes i had a large lump about the size of an apple popping out of my lower back. i went to the doctor and he told me it was a hematoma and that i should ice it and i would see daily progress. over the next week it has went down alot. now i have a little lump on my back and im wondering how long it should take for it to go away? should i still be icing or should i use heat? is there anything i can do?

The lump that you feel is scar tissue ingrowth into the resolving hematoma.  After any trauma, scar tissue is its worst at four weeks and then begins to resolve.  I would expect complete resolution over the next several months.
