Massaging "chord" under the chin

My plastic surgeon told me to start massaging a "cord" of firm attachment under my chin/neck area at 1 month postop.  It is very tender and is the area where I had liposuction and a neck lift.  Why is this tight chord  attached  there and will massaging it help loosen it up?  It goes from directly under my chin to where my lower jaw attaches to the front of my neck.  Very tender and it gives me the creeps to massage it.

This discussion is related to lower facelift problems.
