Nipple Reconstruction following breast reconstruction from breast cancer

by Amy1973, Mar 21, 2007 12:00AM
I am looking into getting nipple reconstruction via the way the plastic surg cuts brest skin and wraps skin into a nipple.  Is this a common or best tequnique (followed by tattoo once healed).

I am VERY concerned the nipple will be a hard scar tissue.  I am happy that I do not have to wear a bra and worry about "nipping out" anymore.  I am concerned that the nipple will always be hard - I will not like this.  I enjoy not wearing a bra.  My plastic surg said it will not be hard but I am not sure I believe him.

My hubby and myself was somthing that looks natural but might feel like a nipple.

I am unable to talk with anyone that has had nipple reconstruction.  Thank you.

Nipple reconstruction typically involves eversion of local tissue in a complicated way along with use of a skin graft to form the surrounding areola.  The reconstructed nipple will be soft and natural.  If fact, one of the problems associated with nipple reconstruction is loss of projection over time.  Tattooing to a natural color can be performed before, during, or after the procedure.
