Does anyone know if it is advisabele to have fairly new scarring exposed to sunlight. I had a nasty injury 6 months ago so I guess the scarring is still fairly new??

Sun on new scars tends to make the scarring more visible. However, usually one is told to stay out of the sun for 2-3months. You should also try the creams that help make scars less visible as they will help.

keep your scar out of the sun for about 1 year.  Use ScarAway silicone gel serum or silicone strips (which also shield from the sun while reducing the scar and helping to aid in prevention of excessive scarring.  Hope this helps :)
