6MP for Ulcerative Colitis

Hi, everyone.  I don't have ulcerative colitis myself, but my boyfriend was diagnosed about two years ago when he was 18.  The doctors said he has a mild case, but he's had a good deal of flare ups in the past couple of years.  He was on Asacol at first, which didn't work and he had to be on steroids a few times, but once he switched to Lialda, he didn't have a flare up for about a year.  Now he's had another one flare up.  The doctor put him on a steroid taper, and he was well for awhile, but now he's started to get another flare up WHILE on the steroids, which has never happened with us before.  He's going to get a colonoscopy early in January to see what's going on, and we're both really nervous about it.  

The question is this: has anyone here been on the 6mp?  The doctors discussed it with my boyfriend before he got on the Lialda, but then he didn't have any problems for about a year.  I just have this feeling that they're going to want to try the 6mp with him, but I've heard it has a lot of bad side effects. If anyone wanted to share their experience with it, I'd really appreciate it.

i've taken 6mp when i was 18 years old and i haven't had any side effects from it, but each person is different.
