Cascara sagrada

I recently did a 12 day cleanse, which included a daily dose of cascara sagrada.  I suffer from ulcerative colitis, and since the end of the cleanse, I have probably 10 urgent bowel movements a day that are just mucus, and what looks like pus and blood.  It has been almost a month, and it is showing no signs of improvement.  I have been taking Metamucil to try and get some bulk to my bowel movements but it isn' t working.  I really feel ill and I don't know what to do.....I don't know what to eat, and I wonder if  I should I take sulfasalazine?  I can't go on like this much longer.
