Colitis or not?

by coffeemaker, Dec 11, 2008 09:11PM
I was in the hospital back in 2004 for 5 days which I was said to have Colitis after a Cat scan.  In my doctor's records that I just got today it says "It looks like some kind of infectious type of Colitis"  and "The other concern would be if he has any antibiotic-associated colitis since he took some antibiotics several months back.  Before and durring my 5 days in the hospital back in 2004 I did have blood in my stool, I also ran a high fever and had a white blood cell cound of 11,000.

I've had several episodes of diarrhea since then, my last episode was Nov, 17, 2008 and it lasted for 3 to 4 days, very dark to black liquid bowl movements all liquid.  I go around with a slight irritation in my stomach area at times, also have experienced some today.

Now I'm 29 years old.......I don't know if I have a mild case of Colitis or what.  It was not explained to me as a disease when I was in the hospital back then.

I currently have no health insurance, just needing some advice.

Thank you

When I was in my early 20s even late teen I started getting cramping or stomach pain that made me double up, this was mentioned to the doctor when I was in the hospital.  I haven't experienced that pain much at all since my early 20s.  When I was in the hospital the doctor said my colon was swelled up, they were worried at one point that it might be a toxic megacolon, which that was weaved out and that's when they said colitis was the problem.  Not once did he tell me that it was an infectious colitis, he just said colitis.  But in the Doc's records as mentioned above it said "it looks like an infectious type of colitis".  I recall having mucas in my feaces, here an there, maybe not all the time.  When it flairs up I'm in the bathroom every 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes I have turned around just after coming out of the bathroom and basically went right back in.

How hard would it be for the doctor to detect colitis if I'm not having any episodes?

What type of doctor would I need to start with, family doctor?  Maybe from there he can recommend me to a doc.
