Ex vegans and ulcerative colitis

I was vegan for almost ten years. I had perfect health. I was thirty when I first had symptoms of UC. I had just two months prior given birth to my son and had stopped being vegan during my pregnancy. I also received the MMR vaccinate at the hospital after giving birth. I read that a British study in 1998 (I think) linked UC to the MMR.

Both my gastros insist that none of these factors are likely to have anything to due with my disease. Except that sometimes people come down with it after or during pregnancy or simply in their thirties.

I wonder if changing my diet brought this on. I can't find the will power to go vegan again to see what happens. And aside from that, I tend to flare when I eat too much fiber. I swear I caused a flare by eating most of a fresh pineapple over the course of two days. And another flare came up after eating almost a whole pound of pinto beans over two or three days. Of course, my gastro insists diet doesn't have anything to do with it. But how can that be?

I was hoping someone would have something to say about this. I don't have a specific question really. Just yearning to find some info that will make things click for me.

George's 100% Aloe Vera Juice tastes just like water.  Add digestive enzymes to the suggestions from mama_lady.  Take them before each meal.  Udo's Ultimate Digestive enzymes have the widest spectrum.

Thanks for your suggestions. I shall print your post out and look into it. How can you stand the Aloe Vera juice? I tried that when I was first diagnosed and ick and eww!? Tips? Also the probiotics? I take one from Whole Foods that has 35 billion CFUs - think I should try to get the prescription one? What is it called so I can ask my doctor?

When you say you had UC for 8 years, does that mean you no longer have it? I thought it was incurable?

I could see how eating pineapple could bother your ulcerative colitis. I've had ulcerative colitis for 8 years. I got the MMR vacine after having the condition for 3 years so I'm not sure if there is any connection.

I've been a vegetarian for a number of years and have recently starting eating a vegan diet after struggling for years to get back to full health. I was prescribed these heavy duty medicines that had to be injected into me but I found that what has helped me the most is getting on a mostly vegan diet (I do eat eggs).  If you're not having a flare up, fiber is very important. It's important you keep your body clean and bacteria free.

I'm not 100% better but I still have a lot of fiber incorporated in my diet. One thing that has worked for me are probiotics. I have a prescription strength that I take. I also drink 2 oz of aloe vera juice twice a day 30 minutes before a meal and I also am taking marshmellow root and slipper elm mixed with papaya juice once a day a half an hour before a meal. That helps with the mucus lining of your intestines. Stick with a vegan diet. Make sure you're getting adequate omega 3 and not over doing omega 6 and 9. Make sure youre not eating too much fat, even if you are thin, as too much fat can be hard on your body.
