IBS or Colitis???

When my symptoms first appeared I was in the hospital for 3 days and diagnosed with colitis.  I still have the same symptoms minus the blood in my stools...still the constant urgency to go, severe abdominal pain on the lower left that eventually radiates through my entire abdomen and into my back, loss of appetite and constant fatigue.  After a second colonoscopy I am now being told that I have only IBS.  Can IBS be this severe and so closely related symptom-wise?  Can it be both?  And would that show on a colonoscopy?

Yeah-  the prep for the colonoscopy is pretty bad....I can no longer drink Sierra Mist because I associate the taste with that nasty little bottle of phiso-whatever!  LOL  I woke up twice during my first colonoscopy, so that was definitely the worst but even it wasn't so bad.  Good luck!
