Mesalamine Side Effects

I have been recently diagnosed (Oct 08) with mild Crohn's disease of the distal ileum and with erosive esophagitis at the same time. I was placed on 1000mg of Pentasa 4 times a day and Nexium once a day. I have been having edema of the hands, ankles and feet since approx March 09 and I have red swollen flaky skin on my face as well. I have read that these are all less common side effects of Mesalamine use and usually disappear after discontinuing this drug. My question is: Can I manage my Crohn's on a decreased residual diet without the medication? I feel like I traded one set of symptoms for another.
