I use codeine phosphate in the early morning - I have Crohn's - and it does help with the painful spasms. Another drug that may help is Triptafen.

Back when I had UC (I had J-Pouch surgery 15 years ago) I never got anything more powerful than Tylenol 3.  What you may want to ask your doctor for is an anti-spasmodic.  The spasms are what cause a lot of the pain and if they can eliminate those you will feel so much better.
