Patches of inflammation seen on colonoscopy

I had a recent colonoscopy which apparently showed some 'patches of inflammation' in my bowel. They said my bowel looked fine except for these patches of inflammation and they have taken 4 biopsies. Could this be the start of Crohn's? I have had some periodic episodes of diarrhoea, bloating and some abdominal pain. Is there anything else that could cause some 'patches of inflammation' - and why would they be there if my bowel is, as they say, 'fine'.

I just had a colonoscopy today, and the doctor said everything is fine, no polyps, but he found a couple of small patches of inflammmation. Five years ago they discovered one small polyp on a colonoscopy, it turned out benign. My father's father died of colon cancer at the age of 63. I have alpha one antitrysin deficiency and my chances of developing colon cancer is up at 25 times higher than the normal population. I hope the patches go away and it is not crohns.

When I was diagnosed they had told me becuase of both ulcers or scaring from ulcers and inflammation confirmed it was Crohn's.  Try to think on the positive side you only have patches of inflammation and it could be as simple as ibs.  Good luck with your results hope all turns out well for you....

Hi April, yes it's ME!  Yes they weren't too concerned but my follow up appointment isn't until 26th MARCH!!!!!!  so I won't get my test results until then. I would imagine though if they found something they would contact me, don't you think?
Yours is much much much much worse than mine. I don't have ulcers or gastritis in my stomach and they only said there were patches of inflammation down one side, so I'm hoping it's really nothing.
You take care and I hope everything goes well with you. I'll keep watching for your updates on this and the Colonoscopy and Scared Forums.

I had the same thing with my last colonoscopy, patches of inflamation in the small intestine, the duodenum, and stomach. This seems to confirm their diagnosis of Crohns with me. If he said it was on the right side it could be the terminal ileum which is the lower right side, the last part of the small intestine where it hooks up to the large intestine.
eb, is that you? So I may have a fellow Crohn's sister, huh! Hopefully, you will find out soon enough when you get your test results back. Try to not worry too much until then. Yours sounds better than mine. I had ulcers too and gastritis in my stomach. It's very possible it's just IBS like Lizzie said. Let us know when you get the test results back. I wish you the best.

Thanks dizzybuff38 I will ask the question as to where the patches of inflammation are - whether small intestine or colon. - He said the inflammation was 'down one side' whatever that means?

Patches of inflammation could be due to numerous problems, an infection or ibd, etc.. . Wait until you get the results of the biopsies. the pathology report should be able to determine if you have an IBD...Crohn's or Ulcerative colitis. If there are "some patches", this is more indicative of Crohn's rather than UC, as Crohn's "skips" through the bowels, whereas UC is throughout the whole lower colon. Ask where the partches are - the small bowel or colon. If in the small intestine, this is definitely Crohn's as Uc does not affect the small intestine.
I would question your gastro as to the comment: "your bowel is fine". |t is obviously not and you need further answers.

Take care, Liz.
