I had a total colectomy after 10 years of ulcerative colitis because my bowel perforated from too much active disease. A year later I had the J-pouch created to give me back my bowel function. Yes, you can live a very normal and disease free life. I go to the washroom 6 - 10 times a day depending on what I eat, have a very full career and all is normal in every way. After all those years with UC and not being able to put on weight I now have to try to lose weight. I eat anything I want and drink wine a lot. Very normal.
