Had diagnosis at age 19 and colon and rectum removed.
Recovery was long but have lived a fulfilling life now am age 58.
Currently on a biologic but mostly to help with arthritis associated with Crohns.
Talk with loved ones or a counselor if needed. this disease is not openly talked about and many find it uncomfortable or worse "shameful". Bowel issues are taboo for many and this can lead to isolation. Read as much as you can to be informed of what you have and treatment options.
Find out if other family members have this disease as it does have genetic component.
This is my first time on this site so sorry about delayed response. Was searching because yet another family member just diagnosed!
I was diagnosed about a year ago. For as long as I can remember I'd suffer from seemingly random bouts of severe bloating, pain, etc. that would go away in 24 hours or so. I have since recognized this as Crohn's and now pretty much have the disease under control. I know it's different for everyone, but personally I find that, in addition to taking Pentasa, the lowest level non steroidal drug for Crohn's, diet and stress are key.
In terms of diet- I avoid dairy, fatty and friend foods and super high fiber content foods (like flax meal or metamucil). I eat small meals, more often during the day and I drink a lot of water. I avoid too much caffeine (though I love my espresso) and I don't overdo it on the alcohol
Stress, for me, plays a serious role in managing my disease. As a graduate student in a PhD program, I have to make sure I keep stress in check. Yoga, meditation, being active helps this a lot.
Really, it's about getting to know yourself..body and mind. Good luck!
