ostomy for life, or is there another option?

ostomy for life, or is there another option?

I am 23 years old and have had crohn's since i was 18. they first thought it was UC but later found it was crohns when i started getting fissures and fistula's. I had a subtotal colectomy and a reversal in 2007. i was healthy for a year and then started getting joint problems, and now i have had 6 fistula surgeries in the hospital and now the holes won't heal. im on prednisone, flagyl, percocet for the pain and i don't know what to do anymore. they even tried a drug called cimzia, where i give myself injections every two weeks, but that causes my fistulas to become more infections. I am thinking about just wearing a colostomy bag and getting it over with, but im worried about having kids and living a normal life forever with my husband. Is surgery my best option?

I have an Ileostomy (no large colon) after having CD for 11 months... My quality of life is so much better and I can now cope with so much. Please see my profile. I cannot have children due to my medications but you should check with a colorectal surgeon and have a serious chat with your husband about what you are going through and then decide if the bag is the go or not. I also had vaginal and anal fistulas. The life you lead after an operation like this is what you make of it... I am a volunteer for the local ostomy Association and Chairperson for the new Support Group. We have clients who go back to work after this surgery and have no problems. So as said, your quality of life can be terrific. I also suffer with joint problems - osteopaenia, polyarthritis and the latest, sacro-iliac arthritis. All CD related! I am with you and hope you do the right thing for yourself and those around you.
