Blood and mucus in the stool is abnormal and needs further investigation. A colonoscopy seems a good place to start. I was dx with Crohn's in 1970 by laparatomy (no colonoscopy or endoscopy then) and didn't have blood or mucus in my stool - just severe weight loss and diarrhea. Not everybody presents the same for Crohn's, as I didn't, i.e. no pain, blood, mucus. However, in the last 37 years I have had bad flares with severe rectal haemorrhaging and been hospitalised on IV steroids. I know if I see mucuous in my stool it is time to see my gastro before the situation gets worse. In my own case the mucous and blood were from ulcers and crypt abscesses in both the small and large intestines.  This can be treated - various new meds now, but the problem will not go away by wishful thinking and needs specialist intervention.

Good luck,
Liz.
