Vice President Joe Biden’s advice for self-defense:

"U.S. Vice President Joe Biden’s advice for self-defense: Buy a shotgun, not an assault rifle.

Biden, who is spearheading a push for President Barack Obama’s gun control proposals, dispensed this off-the-cuff tip for protecting life and property during an online question-and-answer session on Facebook on Tuesday.

The vice president has not one but two shotguns that he says he keeps in a locked cabinet at his house in his home state of Delaware, and he has given his wife, Jill, explicit instructions on how to deal with any would-be intruder.

“We live in an area that’s wooded and secluded,” Biden said. “I said, Jill, if there’s ever a problem just walk out on the balcony here ... put that double-barreled shotgun and fire two blasts outside the house.”

“I promise you whoever’s coming in is not gonna,” Biden said. “You don’t need an AR-15 (assault rifle). It’s harder to aim. It’s harder to use and in fact you don’t need 30 rounds to protect yourself.”

“Buy a shotgun,” he said, lowering his voice almost to whisper.

The vice president, who is known for sometimes telling long, personal stories in his public appearances, is pushing Obama’s plan for curbing gun violence following the December school shooting massacre in Newtown, Connecticut.

But some of the proposals, including a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, have run into stiff opposition from the influential U.S. gun lobby and their advocates on Capitol Hill."

As long as Biden is running this thing, it looks like we really don't have much to worry about.

I've only heard the term "dynamic" used around here in reference to "entries".  Numerous agents breach and engage one or numerous targets.

Yeah, I jacked that up.  I was referring to "race tree's" that do move back and forth and stationary targets that obviously don't.

Local law enforcement is all issued .40 so they can knock the tree around pretty good.  With that 9mm, I have to try to hit the outside 1/3 of the target to get it to switch sides.

I still think the best gun to have for self defense is the one you don't need.

In all honesty, if gun advocates would back down even a little bit, I'd be so much more convinced but these arguments of hammers verses guns make it all seem so desperate by gun owners.

People spew out the word 'facts'-- well, the fact is----  every automatic weapon that a law abiding citizen has is a danger.  Why?  becauae you are nnot home 24/7 and someone could break into your home and steal it.  And THEN your gun is used to kill someone.  Exactly what happened with Adam lanza.  His mother was a law abiding citizen and someone that had a screw loose got ahold of her gun.

I'm still not convinced that someones desire to shoot at a range and have an ar weapon 'just in case' is a good enough reason not to ban them.

"...I have on numerous occasions out shot members of our local law enforcement with this gun, both at static and stationary targets."

Is there a difference between "static targets" and "stationary targets"?

Or did you mean to include "dynamic" or "moving" targets?

In all of my training, its been suggested that the perfect gun for personal/home protection is the gun you are most comfortable with, and the gun that you can operate most efficiently.  Personally, I carry my 9mm.  I am very proficient with the gun.  I have on numerous occasions out shot members of our local law enforcement with this gun, both at static and stationary targets.  (That should be embarrassing to these professionals that I out shoot.  Unfortunately it isn't in most cases as they seem to not recognize that their lives or the lives of civilians could be at risk at any given moment.)

I do have other guns that would fill different scenarios a little better, but I am real comfortable with that little 9mm.

My hunting rifle is a .270 Winchester Mag and I am very proficient with that as well, but being a bolt action it probably isn't the best idea for home/personal protection.  But, those pesky prong horns and mule deer that are often out there about about 400 yards are a goner.

I'm not sure what the "best" weapon for home defense is, but for my money, a TAURUS "Judge"[1] is my favorite.

[1] http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taurus_Judge

It's chambered for either .45 OR 410-shot.

The model I have, has (7) chambers, and I have it loaded with alternating .45 & 410-shot, loads.

Keep it under my mattress, on my side of the bed, loaded at all times (I'm not married nor do I have kids, so I'm the only one that has access to it at any given time).

As I said, for MY money, it's the best weapon for self-defense/home-defense.

“Stiffer sentences for those that commit crimes with guns?”

That’s been are argument all along but for some it doesn’t really matter. There are some that actually believe taking certain guns and above 10 round magazines from Law Abiding Citizens is going to make a difference.

Here is a question they’ll probably not touch.
If the rate of fatalities caused by People Speeding averages between 11,000-13,000 Deaths per Year, the average Interstate Speed is 70 MPH, where is the Obama/Biden outcry to ban all Automobiles that have 120MPH on the Speed Odometer?

Of course all of them have the potential to do harm but the media and the powers that be need to stick to facts.I don't think banning look-alike rifles will help.Stiffer sentences for those that commit crimes with guns? Where I live I would not be comfortable without one and also if we didn't have them my daughter would have been killed by a "cat" when she was 3 years old.As it was i lost my favorite dog to it and all the chickens.

The general public is being mislead to believe that an assault rifle is more dangerous.than a regular pistol or rifle.Ar-15 are look alikes of the M-16.Fully automatic and semi-automatic weapons are not sold to the public.Only the Military had automatic rifles. The 3 short burst shot is not even used anymore.Banning what is CAlled an assault rifle is just a ban another type of rifle.http://washingtonexaminer.com/media-myths-on-assault-weapons-and-semiautomatic-firearms/article/2516156

It dawned on me “two blasts” from a shotgun using Buckshot is not much different than shooting 30 rounds and they’re not accurate.

And for protection, I would choose an AR over a shotgun anytime.  I would probably chose a 22 over a shotgun.

Gene’s answer is the most Logical.

If I would have to pick the best all around, I would say the 9mm. It doesn’t have much recoil and with Hollow Points has a decent amount of knock down power. I prefer larger Calibers. I have a Ruger 41 Mag and a Glock 44. I wouldn’t recommend either of these unless you’re used to shooting larger caliber guns because of the recoil. I will say the last one I would recommend would be a shotgun.

I once shot a Deer with #1 Buckshot at about 25 Yards. When we finally found the Deer and dressed it, it only had 2 pellets in it. That means about 10 pellets scattered. I don’t think I would want to use this for protection inside my house. I bought a 30” Full Choke Barrel and it tightened the pattern but it would still be the last gun I would recommend for protection.

Cool, I'll get the 12gauge and go pop one of the dozen or so I saw a few hundred yards away earlier in the backwoods... ok, not really there not in season yet.

Can we let Joe Biden not give information on what kind of guns to buy?
actually I prefer nobody tell me what guns to buy... or sling shots, or etc...

THIS IS NOT A TRICK QUESTION:

Does anybody know the best gun for home/personal protection?

nygirl7 same thing I said to mike applies to you, why post if you are going to be a clown? Nothing I said was to provoke anyone with anything.

The reference mike made to storming the house is midevil times of storming the castle and castles were protected with moats and archers as well as other means. If that went over both of your heads then so be it.

I also you said "He just doens't need a BIG weapon to COMPENSATE for other SHORT COMINGS like some men apparently would"-well who are these other men? Is a shot gun not a big weapon? So Biden is over compensating for something?

Vance Vance Vance.............why do you do this to yourself? Everyone, EVERYONE can see who attempted to provoke the other here.

Plus Mike doesn't need a moat I do believe from prior posts he is a perfectly responsible gun owner himself.  He just doens't need a BIG weapon to COMPENSATE for other SHORT COMINGS like some men apparently would.

Why are you even on this forum if you are going to be a clown everytime you post. This is the 2nd time I have posted some humor, and you come back with some statement that belittles yourself.

I don't know if you have a need to start trouble and be an internet wanna be tough guy or you are trying to compensate from short comings by trying to mock others? Whatever it is you should check yourself.

Pay-Per-View event, Tea Party storming Mike's house. I am sure the moat and archers will keep them at bay mike. You can sleep tight.

So you go outside fire 2 shots in the air, then the criminal fires 2 shots into your chest because you gave your position away.

Can a shot gun not do more damage since it sprays shots? A handgun or rifle is 1 shot in a specific location. Shot gun has potential to hit many targets.

Who is this "we" you're talking about?
I don't need an AR-15 rifle for my protection either - unless the state militia, or the Hells Angels or the Tea Party is storming my house.
