Ben Carson skeptical over Gray case

(CNN)Ben Carson sounds skeptical that the recent death of a Baltimore man in police custody was a mistake.

The type of severe spinal injury suffered by Freddie Gray "requires a great deal of direct pressure to that area," meaning, "there is a high likelihood that direct trauma occurred," the presidential prospect wrote on Facebook Friday.

"It would be almost impossible to acquire such an injury by simply rolling around in a van, regardless of how violently," he wrote Friday on Facebook. "Let us hope that whoever inflicted said trauma did not intend to yield such an outcome."

Carson's comments resonate uniquely among those who are seeking or are likely to seek the White House in 2016. He -- as was Gray -- is African-American. Carson is also a retired neurosurgeon and a former resident of Baltimore.

On Friday, a prosecutor announced that Gray's death was ruled a homicide and that charges had been filed against six police officers, including the three that arrested him and others that could have summoned medical assistance.

Carson said he was pleased the prosecutor acted "sooner rather than later" because Gray's death is "a tragic incident surrounded by significant clouds of suspicion."

The prosecutor's announcement came after more than a week of protests that on Monday night devolved to violence. On Tuesday, Carson called the previous night's riots "very sad and unfortunate" and urged the community to "create positive change ... through peaceful conversation and policy ideas."

Carson called for peace in the community to let the "legal and judicial process work" toward a resolution.

"It is undoubtedly true that this entire situation would be easier on everyone if admission of whatever guilt exists and a full description of what occurred is presented to the necessary authorities," Carson wrote.

I do think there are people who go a life time doing all they can to "look hetero" but in reality are gay.  I also think there are gays that try to go their whole lives trying to look hetero.  I also believe there are people who try to reside between the lines.

@mike.... that's exactly what it was that made me turn the volume down on Carson.  The prison gay thing...

@el.... the gay prison stuff.  I think there is a huge difference between doing what one has to in order to make it through their time served and "being gay".  I can tell you without question, being gay was no decision my son ever made.  He was born that way and it was obvious from a pretty early age.

It's like saying you chose to be hetero.  When did you make that decision?  I personally don't remember even thinking about it.

I think when we're discussing whether being gay is a choice we shouldn't be drawing inferences from a prison setting. Prison doesn't present an opportunity for choice - to say the very least. Perhaps if conjugal visits were generally allowed we might be able to intelligently draw some inferences.

Your friend doesn't seem like he's gay - he seems traumatized.

Anyway... maybe THAT'S what Carson was referring to. Because those me behind bars, DO CHOOSE (the ones that do it voluntarily, not the ones that are raped) to perform acts that society considers to be "gay" in nature.

The choices are: having some type of homosexual physical/sexual relief with another human being, having no sexual relief or relying on auto-eroticism. It's like if all there was to eat was oatmeal. Would you say that a guy who ate the oatmeal chose oatmeal or did he simply choose not to starve to death?

I think Carson was wrong. I do not believe that people go into prison straight and come out gay. Can it happen - does it happen on occasion? Perhaps it does but that really doesn't shed any meaningful light on how our sexuality is determined. I think the premise that being gay is a choice is widely denounced by experts in the field of human sexuality. Frankly, I think it was an ignorant statement for a common man to make and much worse for an educated man of medicine to make. I was shocked when I saw him say that on CNN - really, I was shocked.

Or maybe I'm giving Carson too much credit, and he's an ignorant moron with archaic ideas about what "gay" is & isn't...

His prison-gay comments though, have SOME validity.

I have a VERY close friend, that spent 20 years behind bars, in Huntsville, TX (state prison).

He was 19 when he went in, and just about 40 when he came out. I know him through NA (narcotics anonymous).

He said that a lot of guys in prison, "go there" while behind bars for extended periods of time, but it's more for the intimacy part (the ones that are straight and get into 'prison relationships'). There are some that prey on others, and that's simply for the POWER part (prison rape, etc). He said what you see on TV, is partly true.

Now... are those men gay? He says NO, they aren't gay. They're doing what they have to do to survive a really difficult situation. Human's are touchy-feely creatures, by nature. You can't expect a human being (gay, straight, male, female, or otherwise) to go 20 YEARS without intimacy. We've actually spent a little time talking about it, as he had a VERY difficult time getting over it, now that he's out. He still hasn't fully recovered from the emotional trauma he experienced while inside, but he works on it everyday and gets stronger daily.

Anyway... maybe THAT'S what Carson was referring to. Because those me behind bars, DO CHOOSE (the ones that do it voluntarily, not the ones that are raped) to perform acts that society considers to be "gay" in nature.

Anyone?

I'm with Vance - some of his ideas are solid, but there's something missing... and of course, his ideas on the gay issue will never let him get off the ground.   He's really big on the Christianity issue, as well, so he'll go over well with some Christians, but probably no one else.

[...Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon and potential Republican presidential candidate, said Wednesday that “a lot of people who go into prison straight, and when they come out they’re gay.”

The remarks were made on CNN’s “New Day” in response to a question from host Chris Cuomo, who asked if Carson thought being gay was a “choice.”

“Absolutely,” Carson replied.

Asked why, he went on to explain his prison theory. “So did something happen while they were in there?” he said. “Ask yourself that question.”...]

[...Later Wednesday in a statement to CNN, Carson backed down a bit from his morning remarks.

“I do not pretend to know how every individual came to their sexual orientation,” he said. I regret that my words to express that concept were hurtful and divisive.”

Carson made waves in 2013 when he compared gay marriage to pedophilia and bestiality in an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity.

“It’s a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality,” he said. “It doesn’t matter what they are. They don’t get to change the definition.”

He later withdrew from a commencement speech at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine after students and staff expressed outrage at the remarks.

“Of course, gay people should have the same rights as everyone else,” Carson told attendees at the Conservative Political Action Conference in 2014. “But they don’t get extra rights. They don’t get to redefine marriage.”]

Did he really say being gay was a CHOICE?!?

I think that MAYBE 1% of the time, that may be true, but the overwhelming percentage of the time, like 99.99999999% of the time, I believe people are born that way.

I'm just making up those stats, but you all get what I'm saying.

Hopefully his position on the topic will evolve, or he just mis-remembered or mis-spoke. That's good enough for most people, if a politician comes out and says something of that nature.

Brice, you might be thinking about his comment that he believes being gay is a choice because men go into prison straight and come out gay.

He walked back from the statement pretty quickly but for an educated man of medicine to make such a lame remark shocked many people - even his supporters.

He's right.  I wouldn't say FAR right, but he is out there.  I used to really like him but he said something a couple of months back that made me question everything I'd ever thought about the guy.  (Off the top of my head, I can't remember what it is.... hopefully coffee or my memory will kick back in)

I wonder what this guy's all about?

I have heard his name and seen him splashed across the news as of late, but can't say I know much about him.

Anyone have an opinion on him, or too early to tell which side his politics rest on? I mean, is he FAR-right? Further Right than Attila the Hun? More of a Centrist-Right? Or is this a Lefty in Right clothing?

Anyone?
