Defunding DHS

http://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/dhs-chief-jeh-johnson-public-needs-be-particularly-vigilant-n310576

".....In order to stay ahead of terrorist groups like ISIS, Johnson said later, he counts on personnel who will be furloughed if Congress does not fund the Department of Homeland Security by the end of this week. The secretary estimated 30,000 department employees will be let go temporarily if Congress does not act by Friday......Johnson also said a department shutdown would halt grant-making for state and local law enforcement agencies. Additionally, the department would not be able to pay for the security added to the country's southern border last summer. The security was added in response to the rise of migrants crossing the border......"

So Republicans are funding DHS just not Obama's Exe order on immigration and Dems will not fund DHS because of the language in the funding bill. And when the shoe was on the other foot you blamed Republicans and now you still blame them?
Can't have it both ways.

Sorry - you're right - al Shabaab is based in Somalia... it was the Westgate Mall in Nairobi, Kenya that was attacked...

Yes, I remember the discussions about "non-essential" employees of the federal government and the term should be self descriptive; however, having been one of those, I can say that the term is, in some ways, misleading, because I was considered "non-essential", yet, there wasn't anyone else to do my job, without doubling/tripling someone else's work load and one can only do so much in an 8 hr day. In that sense, if you're going to get rid of the employee, you have to get rid of the service that employee provides.  Yet, when "non-essential" employees were furloughed, we did, basically, put our work on hold, shut down our stations and go home and when we were brought back to work, picked up where we left off.

Yes, there are agencies charged with keeping track of who is in this country, where they are and what they are doing... if they can "lose" people, why do they keep bringing in more people that they don't know and that they can't keep track of?  This makes no sense, unless they know they are bringing in these people to overrun the country and they don't want to keep track of them ... Anybody thought of that?  What a silly idea, huh?  Maybe we should all start learning the Curan and pick out our head gear?

Here is what I caught this morning while walking out the front door, in reference to Somalia, Somali population in Minneapolis and the Mall of America.

I think the reason they bring up "Mall of America" is that it is such a tourist attraction.  Packed with people from all over the country if not the world.  The impact could be huge, traditionally not a lot of security there and it just might be easier... so to speak.

Hmmm, HLN said they were from Somalia.  Nonetheless, its a junk show.  It bothers me to no end that we let "questionable" people in the country to begin with.  Like you said above, we're not vetting these people as they come in.... what is the use of these government entities if they aren't doing that?  Are they the welcoming committee?  Jeez.....

There are at least 5 agencies I can think of off the top of my head whose job it is (or was once described as having something to do) to pay attention to who is in this country, where they are coming from, etc.

I remember some of the discussions about "non essential" employees a while back on CE.  To me, the words "NON ESSENTIAL" pretty much say all they need to say about these people.  Why are they still on the pay roll?  You want to be fiscally responsible or at least look like you're trying to be?  Trim the fat... get rid of non-essential positions.  if it turns out that they are indeed essential, change the verbiage.... can't they even get that right?

The government has shut down numerous times/departments in the past and most of us saw minimal disruption to our lives.  It's very sad to say that their "fiscal saber rattling" is hardly making an impact anymore.

Having worked for the government, quite frankly, if you're non-essential personnel and depending on your job, yes, you do simply shut down your station and go home... when you come back to work, you power up and pick up where you left off.

And of course, Brice is right -- productivity and the government are laughable when used in the same sentence/paragraph...

Brice, this terrorist group, threatening the Mall of America is based in Nairobi, Kenya... Of all the malls in America, I'm not sure why they would pick on the Mall of America in Minneapolis.

"Productivity" struck me as funny when we speak about government and productivity in the same sentence/reference.

Side note to the terrorism/mall strike @ Mall of America in Minneapolis, MN.  Minneapolis appears to have one of the largest Somali populations in the country and apparently this group making the threat is based where?  If you guessed Somalia, you should get a prize.

In reference to "losing track of people".  I distinctly remember a story that ran right after 9/11.  They made note that most of the hijackers were here on expired visas and the likes, but one comment in particular struck me.  The guy said we have hundreds/a hundred people in this country from other countries who are on "no fly lists", and we don't know where they are.  "We've simply lost track of them."

Makes me wonder were our countries allegiance to our citizens really is.  What are they doing in government?

Not sure how any department could furlough 30,000 employees and not have it affect its ability to do its job. Gathering/analyzing intelligence is sorta 'clerical' and having those type of workers on the job is what will stave off  /  delay the next terrorist attack. And that's not even taking into account the loss in productivity that's incurred every time Congress feels the need to do this type of fiscal saber rattling. It takes time to shut things down and start them back up -- you don't just flip a switch, walk away from your duty station, and assume some magical 'essential personnel' will cover what's most important to your job.

Yeah, unfortunately, one of the articles I read about bringing in the refugees mentioned the next election and building up the democratic voter base.

Yes, I guess there are those that think Obama will go down in history as one of the greatest Presidents of all time... I'm sure he will - as soon as they rewrite history...

"What are they thinking? " They are thinking about the next election.
I don't believe our country has hit present lows since Nixon was forced out of office. Our foreign policy is non existent, our allies shunned, our enemies stronger. A weak administration has weakened our country.

I was watching one of the talk shows yesterday and some representative said he thought Obama would go down as one of the greatest presidents in our country's history  --I almost spit out my coffee.

The title of your thread is misleading, because DHS funding has nothing to do with the threat at the Mall of America and whether or not it would be protected.

The fact is that very few people, other than clerical workers will be furloughed if the funding does not go through, because DHS is considered to be "essential" for the protection of the country... NBC always does dramatize things in favor of the administration.  Here's just one of the many articles outlining the situation:

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2015/02/department_of_homeland_security_shutdown_why_it_won_t_be_a_threat_to_national.html

Another thing I might point out is that if they are so worried about terrorism  and the defunding, why on God's green earth is the State Department  bringing in thousands of Syrian refugees when they don't have proper means of vetting prior to bringing them to American soil, nor will they be keeping track of them, once they get here... They don't know who these people are, where their loyalties lie or anything about them, yet they plan to being in 1000-2000 this year and even more next year... What are they thinking?
