Florida parents charged in 2-year-old son's oxycodone death

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida — A Port Charlotte couple has been arrested after authorities say their toddler swallowed prescription painkillers.

Amber and Scott Landry were charged Friday with aggravated manslaughter of a child and are being held without bond.

The coupled called 911 after their 17-month-old son was not breathing last November. The baby was rushed to the hospital where doctors said there were opiates in his urine. A medical examiner said the infant had toxic levels of oxycodone in his blood.

Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives said the couple was snorting oxycodone the night before the boy's death.

Authorities found empty prescription bottles of oxycodone and methadone at their home.

Child welfare officials removed two other children from the home. The 2-year-old's urine tested positive for drugs. The children were placed in their grandparent's care.

Addiction is a beast, no doubting that.  The carelessness and thoughtlessness that are byproducts of the addiction are so prevalent in this case.  So, so, so sad.....

Again, I hate this.

I have 4 grandchildren being raised by their father because their mother was found dead with a pain patch in her mouth. That girl would literally take anything and everything for a hi. There was no helping her. She didnt want any help. What is one to do. Yes, it is sad, very sad.

Addiction is a beast with big teeth and a lot of time... sooner or later it's going to get you.

In this case, it didn't get them, it got a loved one.

Something tells me that these two parents will not take responsibility for this.  It has to be somebody elses fault.

I hate this stuff....
