Gunman Kills Self After 2 NYPD Cops Fatally Shot as "Revenge" for Garner

http://nypost.com/2014/12/20/2-nypd-cops-shot-execution-style-in-brooklyn/

Two uniformed NYPD officers were shot dead Saturday afternoon as they sat in their marked police car on a Brooklyn street corner — in what investigators believe was a crazed gunman’s assassination-style mission to avenge Eric Garner and Michael Brown.

“It’s an execution,” one law-enforcement source said of the 3 p.m. shooting.

The tragic heroes were working overtime as part of an anti-terrorism drill in Bedford-Stuyvesant when they were shot point-blank in the head by the lone gunman, identified by sources as Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, who had addresses in Georgia and Brooklyn.

Moments after killing the two officers, he too was dead, having turned the gun on himself on a nearby subway platform as cops closed in.

“I’m Putting Wings on Pigs Today,” a person believed to be the gunman wrote on Instagram in a message posted just three hours before the officers were shot.

“They Take 1 Of Ours…Let’s Take 2 of Theirs,” the post continued, signing off with, “This May Be My Final Post.”

The Instagram page included an image of a silver automatic handgun with a wooden handle. Another image showed the same camouflage pants and distinctive blue sneakers worn by the gunman as his body was carried from the scene on a stretcher.

He used the hashtag #ShootThePolice, along with two other hashtags referencing Garner and Brown.

Brinsley walked up to the cops’ patrol car at the corner of Myrtle and Tompkins avenues, approaching from the sidewalk.

Witnesses told police that Brinsley wordlessly blasted into the patrol car’s front passenger-side window.

Then he stood stock still for a few moments, fleeing into the subway only when he heard the sirens of a second police car.

Once in the subway, “they engaged the guy and he did himself,” one investigator said.

Brinsley was a fugitive who had just murdered his girlfriend in Baltimore Saturday morning, sources told The Post.

The two officers were pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital, where their colleagues and family members huddled tearfully.

City Council President Melissa Mark-Viverito and Mayor Bill de Blasio were less than welcome guests at the poignant gathering.

“We’re all in this together,” the mayor told grieving cops, according to a cop who was there.

“No we’re not,” one officer said tersely in response.

Just last week cops began signing a “Don’t Insult My Sacrifice” waiver, distributed by the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, that warned the mayor and speaker to stay away from funerals of cops killed in the line of duty.

Lieutenants Benevolent Association President Lou Turco, like many cops, likened the murders to the 1988 assassination of Police Officer Eddie Byrne.

The 22-year-old rookie cop was alone in a squad car in Jamaica, Queens, guarding the home of a witness in a drug case, when he was shot in the head five times. The hit was ordered by jailed drug kingpin “Pappy” Mason, in retaliation for his arrest.

“I don’t even know how to respond to this,” Turco said. “Twenty-eight years on and I don’t know what to say.”

Another cop, who is black, said he fears that “this is just the beginning.

“There are people out there who will want to be copycats. The tension out there is the worst I’ve ever seen it.”

Both shooting locations — above and below ground — were scenes of blood and terror.

“I heard shooting, — four or five shots,” ear-witness Derrick McKie, 49, told The Post of the cops’ tragic murder.

“It sounded like from a single gun,” he said. Ambulances and police cars — at least one located only a block away — rushed to the scene, he said.

“I seen them putting the cop in the ambulance. He looked messed up,” McKie, a barber, added. “He took a high caliber weapon to the face. He was lifeless…I couldn’t see where the holes was that, all I could see was blood. His body was lifeless.”

Singer and songwriter Uriel Winfree III rushed to her roof when she heard the gunshots nearby.

“There was a cop on the ground everyone was around him,” she recalled.

“They were doing CPR on the cop, then they loaded him in the ambulance and they are hauling ***. Everyone was hauling ***.”

Carmen Jimenez, 32, a social worker from Bed-Stuy, was on the platform when the gunman ran inside, pursued by officers.

“Everything happened so quick,” said Jimenez, who is eight months pregnant.

“We were standing waiting for the G train. We heard arguing from the other end of the platform.

“It looked like two cops came in there was lots of yelling and they said, ‘Everybody get down.’

“We tried to get out of there, and there was a lot of shouting, people were screaming, people were trying to run.

“I threw myself on the floor. I was afraid for my life and afraid for my baby.”

Brinsley has a criminal record dating back to at least 2006, when he was arrested in Georgia for carrying a concealed weapon, a knife, as well as shoplifting, according to online records.

The next year he was nabbed in Dekalb County., Ga., for criminal trespass, and by 2009, he was indicted in Ohio for robbery — a charge that was later apparently dismissed.

In 2011, the shooter was arrested again in Georgia for reckless conduct, tampering with evidence, criminal property damage, and discharging his weapon. The outcome of the case is unknown.

“My deepest thoughts and prayers are with the families of the police officers killed in the line of duty today, Public Advocate Letitia James said in a statement.

“Today, the entire city mourns with the NYPD.”

People with PTSD should NOT be in law enforcement.

Ex servicemen or women who are to going into law enforcement should go through some kind of training that teaches them the difference between going to war against an enemy and becoming a peace officer, someone who is supposed to preserve the peace.

The citizens of our country are not the enemy remember ???

The people who shoot up cop cars are warranted because they are always in war time.  Its a war against "The Man" and "Whitey" is keeping them down.

Point?
So a man who served our country can't work in law enforcement? Like many do?

And what about the threats that have been posted online about police? And the police car that was shot at in California?

Okay, the crazed guy was the cop killer in NY who went on to kill himself.

The 13 year old ( maybe he was 12 ) was a young Latino killed by a policeman who was a Vet who sounds like he's still in a war time mind frame, in my opion.

These are two seperate incidents and I'm sorry if I created any confusion.

I'm confused (probably nothing new... lol )... you referenced a 13 yr old with a toy gun, now say it was a crazed man on a suicidal killing spree.  Are you saying the cop was on a suicidal killing spree who killed a 13 yr old with a toy gun?

I don't think there's anything wrong with a war vet being a cop, as long as s/he's of sound mind.  I think police officers should be psychologically evaluated, on an annual basis, anyway.

No, and actually I was referencing a Latino youth who died closer to my home. The killer, a cop, was an Iraqi war vet and should not, in my opinion be caring a loaded weapon and be working in a situation where he has to make these kinds of life and death decisions.

I don't believe any life is worth more than anyone else's. The cops were innocent in this situation. But so have been many of the victims of police shootings.

This was an isolated incident of a crazed man going on a suicidal killing spree. Thankfully he didn't kill more people.

Kind of ironic that kids that grow up in a household full of guns (the most dangerous place in the world to the anti gun crowd) know that you don't point anything that looks like a gun at anything you don't intend to destroy.

What's deplorable is this kids parents did such a **** poor job raising their child, they never took the time to teach their kid not to point a replica toy gun at people. The Cops made a split second decision they will have to live with the rest of their lives. If you want to blame someone blame the parents and the 12 year old that even with the poor parenting was old enough to know better. If the gun would have been real and they hesitated, it could have cost lives. Enjoy the Dream World you live in!

So you think the cop who killed the kid with the toy gun (I thought he was 12 yrs old and black?) should be dead, too?

The killer also shot his girlfriend before shooting these innocent cops and then himself.

I feel so sorry for the policemen's families.

As mentally disturbed as this killer was, he may very well have taken any popular headline and ran with it, using it as an excuse to kill.

The killing of these cops is just as deplorable as the killing of a 13 year old Mexican boy with a toy gun. The difference is the killer of the cops is now dead. The cop who shot the kid within seconds of arriving at the park, is still alive and working.

Nobody in the "community" is stepping in to say anything?  No condemnation?  I find that odd.  With all of the cries of "blatant racism", I would think that someone in the "community" would step up and say something along the lines of, "this isn't doing anything for the cause."

By not saying anything, by default they are agreeing with it.  (The behavior.)

Yes, this killer was a black man.  And yes, he had quite rap sheet.  He'd just shot his girl friend in the stomach that morning.

He'd threatened to kill himself and she'd talked him down.  She ended up taking a bullet in the stomach, herself.  That was in Baltimore; then he went to NY and shot 2 cops... real nice guy.

Wasn't this killer a black man?  I'm pretty sure I saw that on the news this morning, but I've only seen it once.... been waiting for a repeat but no dice.  It seems as if they said the guy had a rap sheet a mile long too....

The difference between these two men and Garner and Brown is very, very simple.  These men were doing nothing other than sitting in a police car.  Never has that been against the law...never.

deBlasio is a ****... he fanned the flames after garner and brown.

I agree horror was the first thing I felt...those poor men...then immense sadness that someone would shoot two innocent men like this.
Thank you Barb for sharing

I think de Blasio should have thought of something like this when he was spouting off a week or so ago about his son being black and how the cops were to blame for so much...

What a horrific tragedy this is... My thoughts and prayers go out the officers families and all the other officers who are out there trying to serve their communities, not knowing if the same thing might happen to them.
