House GOP Committee Chairs Will All Be White Men In Next Congress

WASHINGTON -- House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) announced who will chair all of the major House committees in the next Congress. And it turns out they all have something in common besides party affiliation: they're all white men.

There isn't a single woman or minority included in the mix of 19 House committee chairs announced Tuesday -- a stark reality for a party desperate to appeal to women and minorities after both groups overwhelmingly rejected Republicans just weeks ago in the presidential election. The one female committee chair that House Republicans currently have, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), is stepping down because her term is up. While there are still two lower-tier House committees awaiting a chair assignment -- the Ethics Committee and House Administration -- neither committee has any women or minority members.

At least one Senate Democrat was quick to point out that something is missing from the Republican lineup.

"Disappointed to see House committee chairmanships in the 113th Congress will not include a single woman. -PM," tweeted Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.), who included a link to Boehner's press release announcing the chair posts.

A House Republican leadership aide declined to comment on the lack of diversity in the party's committee leadership. The aide noted, though, that GOP leaders just put four women in party leadership. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash) is the new House Republican Conference Chair, Rep. Lynn Jenkins (R-Kansas) is conference vice chair, Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.) is conference secretary, and Rep.-elect Ann Wagner (R-Mo.) will represent freshman members in party leadership.

Don’t forget about Financial Committees

During a February trip to South Carolina, Bachmann told a South Carolina audience, “I think if we give Glenn Beck the numbers, he can solve this [the national debt].”

I find it hard to believe that NONE of the republican women are "qualified enough" for at least 1 of the committee seats....If that's the case,it's a damn shame...

"So is it because NONE of those women are qualified?"

“To be fair, House committee chairs are typically chosen based on their seniority on the committee, and most committees don't have Republican women or minorities at senior levels."

That's the way I read it.

"They should have more qualified women in their party"

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Republicans don't have Qualified Women in the House. I'm just saying, according to this article, there are none qualified for The Committee Seats because of the lack of Seniority. If this is the case, I 100% agree with them. It’s a No Win Situation. They would be Damned if they do and Damned if they don’t. If they had appointed a Woman that didn’t earn it, they would have caught Hell from both sides (other than the Liberals that believe giving trophies to Kids just for participating in Sports is a Good Thing). The Republicans, for obvious reasons and The Democrats for using a Woman as a “Token”

The latter part f this is my problem with it..They have women in their party. Ok they may not have that many but they still have women there. Why not appoint one of them? So is it because NONE of those women are qualified? That right there is a problem in itself..They should have more qualified women in their party....

I’m I the only one that read the entire article. It appears that some of you read only what you wanted to read.

“To be fair, House committee chairs are typically chosen based on their seniority on the committee, and most committees don't have Republican women or minorities at senior levels. In addition, there just aren't that many House Republican women and minorities to go around. In the 113th Congress, which kicks off in January, House Republicans will have 20 women in their camp,”

Keep in mind, there are 241 Republican Congressmen and only 19 Committee Chairs.

This comes to less than .08% of the 241 will be chosen for those 19 seats. There are only 20 Women and out of the 20 how many have Seniority? I guess they could have gone the Nobel Peace Price Route and just gave one of the Seats away to someone that didn’t earn it.

One of the reasons women are superior.
Yes, I am serious about that. Men act like idiots over things women would ignore easily. And yes, I'm a prime example.....and I know it.

I do feel affection, admiration and respect for the vast majority of members here though. .

It's so easy to misunderstand when there are only type written words and not a face to respond to.

Name calling, belittling, insults, does not further discussion.
In fact it stops intelligent discourse.

Glad you're here Londres

I think that most people here are actually pretty friendly beneath it all.  I put on my thick skin whenever I enter the current events zone.

It's been this way since I've been around and Teko can back me up when I say that this is actually kind of tame compared to past periods here.

What I find hardest about the CE is when I'm misunderstood.  And to clarify what you really meant is hard.  It is so easy when you are writing here to have something taken  a certain way you never even thought of when you wrote it.  That happened to me the other day.  That is a lot harder for me personally than being called a hag or something.  LOL  (I'm not insulted by that because I know I'm hot. ---  kidding.  But I'm not too insulted by silly barbs.  It's the misunderstanding and not being given the benefit of the doubt that upsets me more personally.)  As I said, I had that happen recently and it caused me to feel a bit deflated.  I'm sure everyone has that here as the written word sometimes doesn't catch our full meaning from our heart or mind.

Okay, my deep thoughts on the subject.

Nice to meet you MrsP.

Conflict is important, however, insults, belittling, etc. isn't necessary.  To me that is so NOT necessary.

Without conflict there is NO change......yes, that I will agree with.  Just don't agree with the other stuff.

A friend once said to me that conflict in any sort of relationship is inevitable. It is how it is eventually resolved that matters. I think that's true and it really is character building.
Some of the people here I love easily, others it has taken some time for them to grow on me (and I am sure there are those that feel the same about me) but each and every one has taught me something, if not about an issue, then about myself and I am grateful for that.

I dont think its a joke. This happens from time to time on this forum but once its over, feelings are mended and we move on. Sometimes its good to clear the air and start anew. We are constantly evolving. And some good friendships have occured from times like this. But it can get hairy for sure. I sure have had my days, God and the rest of CE can vouch for that! LOL
