Low levels of radiation detected in N.C./ S.C. an FL * Iodine 131*

3/27/11

Raleigh, N.C. — Very low levels of radioactive Iodine 131 have been detected in the air throughout the U.S. as a result of nuclear leaks at the Fukushima plant in Japan, Progress Energy officials said Saturday.

Iodine 131 is a form of radiation typically released into the air by nuclear reactors.

Progress Energy spokesman Drew Elliot said very sensitive equipment at the utility's Robinson and Crystal River nuclear plants, in South Carolina and Florida, respectively, detected iodine radiation in the atmosphere, but said it did not pose a health threat for U.S. residents.

A news release from the utility stated that similar readings were expected at the Harris plant near New Hill, N.C., and the Brunswick plant near Southport, N.C. in the coming days.

Elliot said iodine travels through the air very easily, which is why it can be detected across the world from Japan, but he reiterated that levels were too low to "affect public health or safety."

An email alert was sent to all nuclear employees, as well as to county and state leaders in the affected areas, on Friday, Elliot said.

Iodine would only help preserve thyroid function and it will do no good for those who already have thyroid function issues.  It can also be harmful for some who have certain thyroid diseases, whether diagnosed or not.

I think it's good mentally to get prepared to a major meltdown of several of these nuclear reactors. Mentally because no other way to get ready for a situation like that!

well I hope you dont get the side effects I got from it, I started to take a supplement dose of Iodine drops, I felt so sick, I couldn't function for 3 days ...I dare not try it again , I heard yesterday that there are major problems.with the reactors ...Today they are sending in experts from the US after Japan called out for help ....

I planned ahead. I have enough potasium iodide stockpiled for 10,000 doses.

adgal, no offense.... but using the term "intelligence" in any fashion in a sentence regarding politicians is a bit of an oxymoron. (You know that....)

Intelligence aside, even some of the most intelligent people would throw themselves into a panic if the "truth" was revealed.  Who knows, there might be some truth with what they said.... LOL.  I guess the word "truth" could be a relative term at this point.

The truth is, we are getting readings of radioactive material in the air.  The amount may not necessarily be truthful.

I agree with you Teko.  I worry about all of you on the US coast.  And just so you know girlfriend...we just bought a bigger house, so you head my way and that door is open!!  Don't you put yourself in harms way.  These are the times I am glad we are so far north, although if it gets really bad it wouldn't surprise me if it drifted this far.

I don't think the whole truth of this is out either.  I wish all the politicians involved in Japan, the US and everywhere else would just give people credit for being intelligent enough to handle the truth.

There was a small tsunami from what I hear. There is also breaking news on the radiation:----------------------------------------
Breaking News Alert: Radiation levels at Japanese nuclear plant 100,000 times above normal
March 27, 2011 7:27:22 PM
----------------------------------------

Leaked water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant showed the highest radiation readings yet, compounding the risks for the hundreds of workers trying to repair the facility’s cooling system. Seventeen workers have been exposed to high levels of radiation, and airborne radioactivity in the unit 2 building remained so high that a worker there would reach his yearly occupational exposure limit in 15 minutes.

There is no one gonna tell me that this will not affect the rest of us. No way!

Japan hit with another large earthquake
Albuquerque Express
Sunday 27th March, 2011

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake has struck off the northeast coast of Japan.

A tsunami warning was immediately ordered by the Japan Meteorological Agency when the earthquake hit on Sunday night.

The tsunami warning was directed toward citizens of Miyagi prefecture, which was ruined by the huge earthquake and tsunami that hit on March 11th.

With the country still struggling to deal with the consequences of its nuclear disaster, radiation leaks are still springing up from the Fukushima Daiichi plant.

Japan has announced that nearly 28,000 people died or are feared dead from March 11th quake and tsunami.

OH NO! Those poor poor people! I hadnt heard about another earthquake, I will have to tune in. About he radiation tho, I dont believe a word out of any governments mouths when it comes to whether we are getting truth or not. I doubt they would tell us if there were a problem and we were at risk, so I guess this is just one of those times it comes in handy to believe in a higher power eh!

I know it's really small amounts, but it frightens me anyway.  I worry about what will happen if there is a complete and total meltdown. BTW...Japan had another earthquake a few hours ago and are once again on tsunami warning.  I with this country could get a break.
