No COLA for seniors . . .

what do you all think about no cost of living raise for seniors and the disabled on social security?  I understand not having a cost of living raise if there's a need to cut back on spending, but if they are going to give everyone $250 as a stimulus to make up for it, why not just give the raise anyway?  That's the part that confuses me!

I believe we as a people have a responsibility to take care of our elderly in our homes and I believe social security and the government should help our seniors and so don't get me wrong - I just don't understand how we can afford $250 being sent to each senior/disabled person?

At the same time, I find it funny our government can bail out big corporations and use a massive bailout for Wall Street, but not for taking care of our elderly.  The only reason they are doing it is because Medicare benefits have been reduced and so they think this will make up for it!

What do you think?

I'm sorry to say that it doesn't appear that "We, the people" are very important anymore and our Constitution has been amended so many times, it's nothing like the original.
Yes, we do still have the Bill of Rights --- but for how long?

Calloused hands and honest work is nothing to be sneezed at.........there are too few people making their own way these days.  I've had my own share of callouses and I'm still working every day so some others can get that "free government money".......

I had planned to retire in a couple of years, but the way things are going, I'll probably end up working until I die............

Social Security was intended for older folks to retire on -- now there are so many getting paid from it, that aren't entitled, that the ones who SHOULD be getting it keep getting cut back.  The elderly and those who are truly disabled and really need it, can't afford to get cut any more.

Thats the truth barb ..I fear there is a lot more to come, each day there is this rush into Chaos  ..if anyone reads History they will see whats happening, its a shock, we  never saw it coming and the writing has been on the wall for many years...I see today a firefighter who was in 9.11 was told to remove his FLAG decal from his locker...this is happening everywhere ,take down that flag', along with the disappearance of the Cross's and symbols of Christianity...

Our constitution has changed so much from what the founding fathers intended and the history books are even being changed so our children don't even know all that's gone before.  This isn't just something that "papabama" brought on -- margy is right -- it's been going for a lot of years, just that 'papabama" is more obvious and pushing to get us there quicker, so HE can be the one who stays in power......... historical --- absolutely!!

FREE -- no, nothing comes free, not even "freedom"....... someone has to pay for it all, whether it be with $ or lives.......we pay the $, the military pays with the lives....how sad is that??

Twehner -- concentration camps? ---- meet ya there...........

Margy -- I think that "we, the people" barely exist anymore because most want it for free........and we all know that "government funded" is free, right?? Well, it is, except for those of us who get up and go to work every day to pay the taxes so the government can fund things for "free".......................

We live in a world of "instant gratification" -- doesn't matter what it is: food, clothes, sex, medical care -- anything and everything.  For most of us here, our parents lived through the Great Depression and tried to give us more than they had and we, in turn, gave our kids more than WE had and now we live in a world of "give it to me NOW, or I will take it from you, whether I'm entitled to it or not"......crime rates will bear that out.

History has shown that a democracy can only last for approximately 200 years-- we've gone beyond that.  Maybe we should be thankful we made it this far??

Dont concern yourself guys Big Government will take care of you......its called Chaos ....'First Create Chaos " ,look beyond the small issues of health care ..more is going on , has been for many years, people know the way America is moving. Wait to see how long the Constitution lasts , remember how it started , you are at the biggest Historical change you will witness, unless'We The People' can over turn it ....Trust me the healthcare is a small smokescreen ......

I have GOOD NEWS for you, Barb135...!  You and I with our outspokenness about how this country is going you-know-where in a hand basket will get us imprisoned one way or the other (might be those concentration camps you alluded to before).  We'll get free care there.  WAIT A MINUTE!!!  We'll be working out hineys off, won't we?  Darn.  Still NOT free.  I can't believe ANYONE is STUPID enough to think it's EVER gonna be free.

The seniors?  I'd rather be THEM at this point, though, and closer to ready to check out of this joint...  It ain't gonna be pretty in the Marxist state Mr. O has marched us into.

Families are going to have to do what they USED to do...take care of Mom and Dad.  Yeah.  What are the odds?  We've raised a couple of generations of SPOILED PEOPLE.  Look now?  They've ALL got their hands out even NOW for free everything.

WAKE UP...  Nothing is free, people.

HelpinUtah said it --- why can our government bail out banks and huge corporations, yet our senior citizens, many of whom live in poverty already, will not get a COLA raise??

Yes, I think if this health care plan passes, we will definitely see rationing, but then to a certain extent, we already are because the insurance companies are telling us what we can and can't get right now -- not as bad as it WILL be though...........

The thing that bothers me is that when the whole health care overhaul came up, it was centered on health CARE for every American citizen; then all of a sudden the focus shifted from health CARE to health INSURANCE for every American citizen.  It's like no one cares whether the CARE is affordable, just that we all have INSURANCE --- the implication being that it doesn't matter how much the CARE is because someone else (government or INSURANCE) is going to pay for it anyway.  Personally, I'd rather have them bring the cost of a doctor visit down to something I can afford and let me pay it myself; same with a prescription.

Another thing that bothers me is the term AFFORDABLE --- I don't understand how the government can assume the right to tell me that something is AFFORDABLE if *I* feel that it doesn't fit my budget...........I've heard figures of anywhere from $200 - $1000/month as a cost for insurance coverage --- I could handle the $200, but surely not a lot more than that, especially since I'm hoping to retire in a couple of years and my income will certainly drop some....same for my husband....No matter what they say -- it's going to be us middle class people who end up paying.  Just think about it -- the poor don't have any $ and the rich always have the loopholes --- who's left??

And the sad part is, I don't even really mind if my taxes go up to help pay for the elderly or for those people who are honestly disabled -- but to have to pay for all the illegal aliens, etc that actually get BETTER treatment than any of us...........

And then comes the question --- once the government has control of our health care - what will they take control of next?

On that note, I must pass along a sign I saw painted on the window of a truck one day:

"FROM MIDDLE CLASS TO POVERTY; HOW'S THAT HOPEY, CHANGEY, THING
                                  WORKING OUT FOR *YOU*?"

They should start drug testing those on welfare and use the billions they would save right there to make sure our seniors are taken care of.

I am for having healthcare for all Americans on a sliding scale type system so that those who are now being forced into bankruptcies and losing their life savings might get treatment for life threatening diseases.  They will not touch my business insurance which will still be available to me so why should I not hope that they can provide for those who do not have any?

Yes as a recipiant of SSDI (which would now be for my physical disability which leaves me homebound and is irreversible) I can see that. I won't be one of the people who is hurt most by it but I know people who will be. I know from people on many forums as well as family members that countries with a nationalized health care system don't recieve quality health care. It tends to be more rationed and not in a good manner, people do lose out. As for the stimulus act if it would bring back more jobs long term I'd be all for it but eventually the money will run out and the jobs will as well. I won't say the whole reason as to why I believe the economy has gone down hill and is not going upwards but one reason is the amount of jobs being outsourced. I'd really like to see an incentive plan to keep more companies to remain in America. These days its more like a matter of mending things and eventually the tears will show through. One must remember the quote from Herbert Hoover "its not a reccession. Its a mere depression". That one was never let down of course. I would be interested in anyone's ideas as to what would bring the economy back as I know other people have more knowledge than me. I don't see many good times ahead and all the articles about the "upcoming recovery" basically get ignored by me. Its a shame when people who are the worst off in our society get affected the most but that has never changed.

As pensioners and disabled live on the poverty line, im with you why not just raise the pension.,. we just got our $900 stimulus in April, pensioners did as well but not sure how much, but now they have been given a  well deserved rise of $30 a week, this is for single income pensioners...Dawn

Dont forget what they have proposed in the health care bill, do you think that seniors will live a long healthy life in OBamacare ,if its going the Brit way trust me there are many shocks ahead..rationing is a real thing, I have relatives in England that do not  get immediate  operations, because they are too old like over 65 ,, they wait in pain for a year or two, ...by the way there is a huge shortage of Doctors here, ....all will be stood in lines to see one .
