Obama: 'There will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine'

(CNN) -- U.S. President Barack Obama didn't speak very long at the White House on Friday, but his message was clear: Russia should not use military force to change the fate of Ukraine.

"The United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine," Obama said.

The president made his remarks as events moved quickly in Ukraine, with troops believed to be from Russia moving into Crimea, the southern section of Ukraine that favors close ties with neighboring Russia. Other parts of Ukraine and the new government leaders want to align with Europe.

"We are now deeply concerned by reports of military movements taken by the Russian Federation inside of Ukraine," Obama said. "Russia has a historic relationship with Ukraine, including cultural and economic ties, and a military facility in Crimea, but any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing, which is not in the interest of Ukraine, Russia, or Europe.

"It would represent a profound interference in matters that must be determined by the Ukrainian people."
He said Ukraine must be autonomous.

"Throughout this crisis, we have been very clear about one fundamental principle: The Ukrainian people deserve the opportunity to determine their own future," he said.

Just before Obama spoke, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power, called for an "urgent international" mediation mission to Crimea.

Also, a bipartisan group of 12 senators from the Foreign Relations Committee expressed support for U.S. assistance in Ukraine and warned of Russian intervention.

"We do not seek confrontation with President Putin and his government, but simply to ensure that Russia abides by its commitments and adheres to core principles of international law. A peaceful, democratic, stable, and sovereign Ukraine is in our national interest," the senators wrote in a letter to Obama.

Vice President Joe Biden spoke with Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk on Friday to "reaffirm the United States' strong support for the new government and our commitment to the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and democratic future of Ukraine," a statement from the vice president's office said.

The State Department warned U.S. citizens Friday night to avoid non-essential travel to Ukraine, particularly to the Crimean Peninsula, citing instability.

At it again, eh?  So you're the self appointed beacon of logic around here?  I wouldn't expect you to notice this, but other people say things that by your own standards should receive your scrutiny, but it doesn't happen.

I believe you and I tried to discuss this in the past, but you stopped short of explaining yourself.  I'll have to go back and look, but I think you "excused" yourself by saying that you would get back to me.  You obviously thought it wasn't necessary.  That alone says it all, Mike.

So I'm: foolish, silly, pathetic, stupid, and a baby

I try and limit the focus my comments & words at Washington DC, and when I do address someone here directly, I attempt to do it with a modicum of tact & respect.

You take it 10 steps beyond, and focus your hatred a vitriol on the people with views that oppose your own, and spew your hatred DIRECTLY at the people here on CE that don't agree with you.

Are you just a mean person by nature, or do you have to work at it?

You are a hateful person Mike.

This is the last time I address you directly, EVER.

Have a nice life.

I wouldn't expect you to be able to distinguish or comprehend their respective intellects.
And when you foolishly cite approval ratings as proof of your silly position it is simply additional evidence of your illogical argument.

Let's take a look at your argument and see how illogical it is.

1) "I'm sorry, but there's NO difference between Palin and Obama in this regard."
2) {They are BOTH "full blow idiots" regardless of how you want to parse it.}
3) "Obama more obviously so, as he sits in the WH and has his every word recorded and distributed for all the world to see."

First you claim there is no difference between Palin and Obama. Then you acknowledge that {They are BOTH "full blow idiots"}.  And then, a moment later, you claim that Obama is more of a full blown idiot which is in direct contradiction to your original premise. That in and of itself vitiates the soundness of your argument. But it doesn't stop there. I think most reasonable people would understand "full blown idiot" to be the superlative - like 100% idiot - so being more than full blown seems like an impossibility by definition. But, if I allow you some silly license to be illogical in this regard then we have your reason why Obama is more of a full blown idiot than Palin. Because "has his every word recorded and distributed for all the world to see". Now that might make him a more well known or a better documented "full blown idiot" but it has no logical impact on whether or not he is more of a "full blown idiot"....which is, as I've noted, an impossibility. It's like having a more than full tank of gas. It's a full tank and that's it.
Then you wind up your pathetic attempt at analysis but citing his low ratings as PROOF of your stupid little point. And you probably believe that those ratings are a valid barometer or measure of the truth. And that is patently fallacious reasoning - if I dare call it "reasoning". While the polls may tell you what people think or feel about something it has nothing to do with whether what the people think or feel is accurate or true or logical. Even you should have figured that out by now.

It looks like it's back to the baby pool for you.

Obama more obviously so, as he sits in the WH and has his every word recorded and distributed for all the world to see.

The great experiment of "Let's put an inexperienced hand puppet in office and see what happens!" has failed miserably.

Approval rating steadily dropping into the mid-30's proves my point. Or am I wrong, and the polls don't mean anything?

Who cares if Palin or anyone else happened to be right about something that Obama was wrong about ???

I think though the situation in the Ukraine is a mess, we should stop playing police to the world and use our resources to improve things here at home.

All of them are "groomed".  All of them eventually fudge something up.  Even some of the half blown idiots are guilty and its nice to see that semi-acknowledged.

Yes Obama has made some gaffes and mistakes and lies if you want to call them that. The difference between Obama and Palin is that Palin is a full blown idiot regardless of how you want to parse it. Some things are just too clear to deny.

BTW, I didn't even bring up Paul Revere.

Looking at the overall picture, I don’t even think “Even a blind pig can find an acorn once in a while” applies here. Foreign Policy was one of Palin’s weakest areas. I think she said what was instructed/groomed to say. Romney on the other hand, I do believe he got it right on his own and had Russia nervous.

Even though Palin made some pretty outrages comments, I have to agree with Vance, Obama has made his share of them also.

Or maybe the racist comments Biden made about Obama being a good clean boy I think he said. Or ones Harry Reid made about Obama speaking well.

But guess those don't compare.

I'm not big on Palin, but she hit this one on the button.  Perhaps this is an acorn for her.

As for fitting the President with the moniker "war monger", it won't happen.  His people won't do that.

This is just Obama trying to rattle his saber.

I wonder if Obama had only listened to Palin back in 2008 or Romney last year if this would be happening?

How does the left feel now about Palin? As she did predict this would happen.

Well if this isn't a "no win" situation if ever I saw one, I don't know what is.

Scenario#1:
We do nothing

Scenario#2:
We impose economic sanctions on Russia

Scenario#3:
We send troops to help the Ukrainians

#1... we appear weak (and violate 'Budapest Memorandum'*)
#2... we get laughed at
#3... B.O. gets hit with a "war monger" moniker, and we get involved in another war we've got no business fighting.

Quite a pickle, and a no win situation.
