SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Authorities in Northern California are searching for a woman who eluded police in spectacular fashion on the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge Wednesday -- surviving a 70 foot drop into the chilly bay waters and hitching a ride out of town.
California Highway Patrol troopers spotted the vehicle, which was reported stolen out of Los Angeles, on the bridge that connects Oakland and San Francisco at about 2 a.m. local time Wednesday. When they approached three women near the car, they say one wearing a black dress climbed the guard rail and plunged into the bay.
Authorities weren't certain whether the woman jumped into the water or she fell.
A short time later, the woman -- soaking wet -- was seen hitching a ride on a dump truck in the Oakland area, where authorities believe she lives.
Officials said their primary concern is the woman's welfare, and then the stolen vehicle.
"It's a pretty big drop," CHP Officer Vu Williams said, noting that had she fell from the bridge's highest point -- 200 feet -- she may not have survived.
Troopers tossed a dye pack into the bay, hoping the unique color would help them track the female fugitive. They found the woman's ID card, but not the woman.
Authorities summoned a CHP helicopter at dawn and the help of the U.S. Coast Guard, but have so far been unable to find the lady.
The dump truck driver who picked up the woman later went to police and told them he transported her to a "safe location" in San Francisco, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The other two women seen with the fugitive were questioned and released, and told officers they weren't well-acquainted with the lady in the black dress.
