I truly don't see them getting anyone to quit. They aren't really saying anything we don't already know. I am pretty sure I wouldn't have quit except to have these babies. That was the only thing that ever really motivated me. And know what...I miss it! I admit it...I loved smoking.
I think most of the pictures are designed to scare young people...and if it does, then I am ok with it.
I too am from Canada and the packs have had these graphic photos on for years....its not what makes me want to quit, I think you just get used to seeing them after awhile and don't even notice anymore.....but if it helps even just one, than its worth it!!!
I remember going to the doctor and having the same thing! Oh my, how things have changed eh?
That's so funny my doctor was the same, ashtray on his desk with his stethoscope.
There's nothing the government can do to make me stop smoking. I'll quit when I'm ready or die, I guess. I don't really care what they put on the outside. And kids won't think it pertains to them; they're indestructible and immortal!
Sorry but I'm not a fan of Nanny Government. It's an impingement on freedom and rights.
After 38 yrs. I don't think I'm giving them up. Problem is those commercial cigs are really just a bunch of nasty chemicals. I have rolled my own for ages. I buy organic tobacco leaves, cut em up and inhale !
God put the tobacco plant on this earth, I don't believe he is going to shorten my life because I smoke. Many smokers live into the 100's. Many people who never smoke or quit long ago get lung and throat cancer.
People die everyday from trains, planes and buses, if your living your life in fear, you haven't met your maker.
Yes, we have come a long way from those days. When I was 18 & pregnant my doctor used to sit at his desk right in the room with me & chain smoke. Old Doc Knaggs. What a character he was. I say that any deterent to smoking is a good one because it's bad news!
I started smoking as a 12 year old,we had a local milk bar that used to sell us kids cigarettes for 5c each,so if you couldn't afford a packet you could normally get some to last through the day. He'd be charged now for doing that.
Can I reply as an ex-smoker? I do think it would be a good deterrant but the person has to be ready to quit, I think.
I do know that they oftentimes have someone visit schools who had mouth, tongue or throat cancer, who would talk to the students. Some of these poor people had half their face gone or had to speak through a hole in their throats. My sister told me they had one such visitor when she was in early high school (I was still in junior high). She said after the assembly she saw a lot of students throw packs of cigarettes into the trash. I do think that really affected the students. Unfortunately, she still picked up the habit but I still think that would be more of a deterrant than pictures. It's more real this way, you know? I think they should do this more often, only in the middle schools AND the high schools.
I started smoking as a teen because my sister and some of my friends did. Do you know they still had vending machines where you could buy cigarettes? It was so easy to get. I'm glad they don't do that anymore.
I can tell you what worked for me. I heard or read somewhere that it generally takes 20 years to get lung cancer (at smoking one pack a day) and that once you have it it's pretty much a death sentence. That scared the living daylights out of me. I realized I had already been smoking about half that time. That was 16 years ago.
Also, I watched some family members die too young, not able to breathe. It was terrible. That really affected me the most.
We have had this in Australia for about 8 years, and it's the same as Canada,I agree with teko.
I think its way overdue, but do think it is good as a deterrant. Unfortunately those that are addicted need another form of help. A miracle for starters cause it is just soooo hard to get off of em.
We have this in Canada and have for several years now. The pictures take up the outside of the pack, and include images of babies with smoking moms, pregnant smoking women, cancerous lungs, brown stained ugly teeth, so on and so. Underneath is a big warning such as "smoking will harm your children", etc.
It hasn't so much made people quit that are already addicted, but has proven to be a fairly good deterrent in stopping people (especially young people) from starting. In my opinion it's a good thing.
