Understanding Donald Trump

Johns Hopkins’ Top Psychologist Releases Terrifying Diagnosis of President Trump

One of the nation’s top psychologists just broke one of his profession’s ethics rules to give President Donald Trump a professional diagnosis.

John D. Gartner, a psychotherapist who teaches at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, told US News that he believes Trump has “malignant narcissism,” which is incurable, and different from narcissistic personality disorder. Gartner violated the “Goldwater Rule” of the psychology profession, in which a diagnosis of a public figure without personally examining them, and without their consent, is considered unethical.

“Donald Trump is dangerously mentally ill and temperamentally incapable of being president,” Gartner said, citing his movements and behavior, pointing out the president’s tendency for grandiosity, sadism, aggressiveness, paranoia, and anti-social behavioral patterns.

“We’ve seen enough public behavior by Donald Trump now that we can make this diagnosis indisputably,” Gartner added.

Indeed, the diagnosis fits the bill of Psychology Today’s definition of malignant narcissism, which, when described, sounds like Donald Trump almost to the letter. Carrie Barron, M.D., who wrote the magazine’s blog on Malignant Narcissism, says the disorder “renders these individuals scary, dangerous, and ruthless.”

Malignant Narcissists will go to great lengths to achieve their aim.  They can be intelligent, high functioning (hold an important job for example) soft-spoken, charming, tearful/seemingly emotional, gracious, well mannered, kind and have the ability to form relationships. They may lie, falsely accuse, dramatize, smear, cheat, steal, manipulate, accuse, blame or twist to get what they want and feel justified in doing so. Because they are entitled, egocentric and desperate, they do not experience it as wrong. They are determined to gratify their wishes and furious if thwarted. Their desire can be so consuming that there is little comprehension of, respect for or ability to empathize with the other.  They lack guilt or remorse and tend to feel or pronounce that it is they who have been mistreated.

President Trump’s aides previously reported that their boss watches an excessive amount of television, mostly out  of obsession for how he is perceived by the media. Salon’s Matthew Rosza compared the timestamps of Trump’s tweets about topics in the news and found that they coincided with the airing of various network news programs talking about those same subjects.

Thank goodness we have guys like this guy around, making  a good diagnosis by watching TV.  I don't know.  I don't like Trump nor do I trust him, but I would also not trust a shrink that diagnoses issues from the TV.  He might as well make a diagnosis via snail mail....

Although I do agree with your statement Barb, "we need to try to find ways to come together ... to make sure we have people running for President that we can actually get behind instead of 2 of the most hated people in the country. "

I was upset, along with many people, that these were the two( hold your nose) choices.

However, that does not change the fact that Trump does indeed obviously have multiple problems that make him simply not fit for office.
And many of us will not forget the comments he said, as Mike Simon pointed out.
We will not stop resisting this attempt to turn our country into a fascist state. That is what good citizens do.
When the corruption has given us a man who exemplifies hate, who fills his cabinet with the very people responsible for our country's mess, and is simply unfit for office~ he will continue to be resisted.
And to me, this is not about either of our broken parties but about a very sick man who should not be our president !

And please do read the definition of narcissistic complex, it fits him to a T, whether you think it's professional to say so or not.

OH - you weren't the only one that was upset that we ended up with "hold your nose and vote" candidates.  Throughout the campaign, I kept thinking that someone decent was bound to come out of the woodwork that I could vote for with a clear conscience, but no one did.

You and Mike aren't the only ones that aren't going to forget those quotes or the implications of them.  I think it's dangerous, at this point, to be calling Trump a fascist, though I do think we all need to be vigilant.

While we may all have the opinion that Trump has problems, we have to move on, at some point. If we, the people, don't make an effort to close the divide, it's only going to get worse.

I, for one, would much rather be discussing the issues that face the country...
You're right, we need to come together~ united we stand, divided we fall. However, we cannot forget what history has taught us about 'leaders' who try to do what Trump's team is trying to do, i.e. silence the media, make aliens the 'other' cut funding for all but the military etc. The similarities to pre-Nazi Germany are chilling. Having said that, I also wonder what else is going on in the world while everyone is focusing on Trump ?
We don't want to forget what history has taught us and we don't want those things to happen - especially, the media silenced, because once it is, we no longer have the opportunity to stay abreast of what's going on.  That's why some in the media need to clean up their act and make sure they tell "everything" exactly like it is, without adding or subtracting from the facts.  I know drama sells, but too many of the networks add their own spin to stories, and by the time they get done, an incident no longer resembles what really happened.

Many of us thought some of the same things when Obama was elected...

Typically, when they have us focusing on one thing, there are things going on that they don't want us to know or care about...
The DNC threw Bernie under the bus.  If they would have been thinking, they would have married Bernie and Hillary.  Most of Bernies votes would have gone that way and it would have swayed some of the electoral college too.... they didn't want that.  Their hatred of the republican party got in the way of them achieving their ultimate goal.  Maybe they learned something...  If they would quit destroying coffee shops, we might be able to tell.

I think it would be hard for most of us to dispute that Trump may have some "issues", since he displays such shows of grandiosity, fantasies of his great power, has such a need to have people "love" him, etc.  All of that said, I do think it's very unprofessional for any mental health professional to attempt to make a diagnosis of anyone, without ever having sat down with that person and actually evaluated them.

I also agree with hrsepwrguy that the election is over and while trying to make it through the next 4 yrs, we need to try to find ways to come together and be looking at 2020, to make sure we have people running for President that we can actually get behind instead of 2 of the most hated people in the country.

"I think it would be hard for most of us to dispute that Trump may have some "issues"

I never said he doesn't have any issue's but I will say I'm willing to give him a couple of years and see where this goes, it is Washington DC were talking about.

"2 of the most hated people in the country."

That's right, what do you do ?

Welcome to politics in 2016 I guess, kind of a sh!t show really.
hrspwrguy... I know you didn't say he didn't have issues - I was merely acknowledging, on my own, that he does.

Even though I didn't like him, I "was" willing to give him a chance, but with the people he's brought into his administration, Steve Bannon to start with, the billionaires he's nominating for high positions, keeping his family involved while they supposedly handle his business dealings, along with being so worried about such silly things as how big the inauguration crowd was, etc, my willingness has pretty much flown out the window and his Presidency isn't even a month old...

As I said in another thread, he promised to unite the country and all he's done is further separate it... it's going to be a long 4 yrs.
"As I said in another thread, he promised to unite the country and all he's done is further separate it... it's going to be a long 4 yrs."

Yes he did promise that but it's kind of hard to do when the other side totally pledges nothing but total obstruction, I'm not saying he is any better though, then you have the MSM on both sides just going to town, there is no such thing as unbiased media anymore, the violent protest it's crazy, that's what I mean by the sh!t show everyone wants to see who can sling the most of it, your right it will be long four years.

"And then some say he is illiterate, can't even read !"

It's really hard to take you seriously when you start making statements like that, in my opinion you are digging for scraps and it shows just how desperate you are to convince me he is not fit, well I feel exactly the same way about Hillary Clinton, she was the most corrupt politician to ever run for the office and THANK GOD she lost.

The election is over so you can stop campaigning against him, he was sworn in on jan 20th in case you missed it, my advice would be to figure out what went wrong and how the dem party managed to lose the election to the likes of President Donald J Trump, perhaps do some organizing in the rust belt states or something.

Have a great day

Did you watch the video ? Do you know anything about illiteracy ? If so, you'd know the common excuses people use when they are embarrassed to admit they can't read. I'm not sure whether he can or not, but if he can, it's at a very elementary level~ obviously .

Yes, Hspwer sometimes it's hard to find good sources but it's hard to not see how obvious Trumps disorder is from this description from the Mayo clinic.

Narcissistic personality disorder

Introduction

Narcissistic personality disorder is a serious emotional disturbance characterized by a grandiose, or extremely exaggerated, sense of self-importance. Individuals with this disorder lack empathy for other people but need constant admiration from them.

Narcissistic personality disorder is one of several types of personality disorders, all of which reflect an inability in the affected person to accept the demands and limitations of the world. These disorders may regularly interfere with a person's behavior and interactions with family, friends or co-workers. Among the other personality disorders are paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, borderline personality disorder and obsessive-compulsive personality disorder.

Although people with narcissistic personality disorder have an exaggerated image of their own importance, they have vulnerable self-esteems and often don't like themselves. Therefore, they seek attention that confirms their grandiosity. When feedback doesn't validate their exaggerated image, they tend to lash out or withdraw.

Narcissistic personality disorder, which is less common than other personality disorders, is estimated to affect less than 1 percent of the general population. Some studies indicate that it's more common among men. The primary treatment is psychotherapy.

Signs and symptoms

Narcissism itself is a personality trait, a much higher regard for and love of oneself than for others. The word "narcissism" comes from a character in Greek mythology. Narcissus, a handsome youth, doesn't think any of his female suitors are worthy of his beauty. When the gods condemn him to look at his reflection in a pool, he stares at himself lovingly for so long that eventually he simply withers away and dies.

Most specialists think of narcissism as lying along a continuum, from people with good psychological health to those with narcissistic personality disorder.

People who have a narcissistic personality style rather than narcissistic personality disorder are generally psychologically healthy, but may at times be arrogant, proud, shrewd, confident, self-centered and determined to be at the top. They do not, however, have an unrealistic image of their skills and worth and are not dependent on praise to sustain a healthy self-esteem.

You may find these individuals unpleasant or overbearing in certain social, professional or interpersonal encounters, but they aren't necessarily unhealthy.

Pathological narcissism

The other end of the continuum — narcissistic personality disorder — is a persistent inability to establish a realistic, stable self-image, therefore creating an overdependence on others to regulate their self-esteem. This unrealistic self-image affects how people with this disorder behave and interact with others.

Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder may include:

Grandiose sense of one's own abilities or achievements
Fantasies about having exceptional power, attractiveness or success
Sense of belonging to an exclusive group of people who truly understand each other
Need for constant praise
Expectations of special treatment
Exploitation of other people
Lack of empathy for other people
Envy of other people or a belief that you are the subject of other people's envy
Haughty or arrogant behaviors

Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder may come across as conceited or snobbish. They often monopolize conversation. They may belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior. When they don't receive the special treatment to which they feel entitled, they may become very impatient or angry.

People with narcissistic personality disorder tend to seek out individuals whom they perceive as equal to their own self-image or to whom they attribute the same special talents and qualities they see in themselves. They may insist on having "the best" of everything — car, athletic club or social circles.

Their personal relationships and interactions are driven by the need for admiration and praise. Consequently, people with narcissistic personality disorder value others primarily according to how well those individuals affirm their unrealistic self-image. This limited value of others usually means that people with the disorder aren't interested in or aren't capable of perceiving the feelings or needs of others. They may take advantage of other people to make themselves look as good as they imagine.

On the other hand, seeking admiration also makes people with narcissistic personality disorder vulnerable to criticism. If someone criticizes an individual's contribution to a project at work, for example, he or she will perceive this comment as an assault on an image that needs to be protected at all costs and may respond with feelings of shame, humiliation or sadness or may express rage, disdain or defensive behaviors.

"......"I listened to a bunch of stuff last night on television that was disgraceful," Trump continued, bemoaning courts he said "seem to be so political."
But the President dismissed claims that he overstepped his bounds as ignorant misreading of the law.
"I was a good student. I comprehend very well, OK, better than I think almost anybody," Trump said. "It can't be written any plainer or better."..."

Trump targets Nordstrom

Moments ago, the President put another company on his target list when he tweeted that Nordstrom had "unfairly" treated his daughter Ivanka.

Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump
My daughter Ivanka has been treated so unfairly by @Nordstrom. She is a great person -- always pushing me to do the right thing! Terrible!

Last week, the luxury department store said it wouldn't be purchasing products from the Ivanka Trump brand this fall, citing the "brand's performance" as its reasoning.

A little research on your good doctor

"Johns Hopkins’ Top Psychologist"

He no longer teaches there he is in private practice in NY

He was also Bill Clintons biographer who had this to say in his forward

"Gartner knew that if he wanted to find the real Bill Clinton, he couldn’t rely on armchair psychology. He had to travel to Arkansas and around the world to talk with those who knew Clinton and his family intimately"

"Of course, there is no marriage more dissected than that of the Clintons. Gartner looks at that relationship with a new focus and clearly sees, in Hillary’s molding of Bill into a more disciplined politician"

Funny how he can diagnose President Trump from the arm chair and not Clinton and by the read I would say he is in the tank for Hillary.

And not to mention that US uncut has to be the worst liberal rag I have ever logged on to, it's worse than thinkprogress, which I didn't think was possible but it is, 90% or more of their headlines are a hit piece on President Trump or his cabinet.

I suggest you find and use better sources

"Gartner violated the “Goldwater Rule” of the psychology profession, in which a diagnosis of a public figure without personally examining them, and without their consent, is considered unethical."

So tell me, why did he break this ethics rule, perhaps he has different political beliefs and is just trying to make the President look bad, either way he just proved he is an unethical doctor.
