Learned I am 13 weeks and 5 days pregnant today. Tricky paternity situation, blah!

Okay, today I learned I am 13 weeks and 5 days in.

That means my conception day was May 8th. I slept with an acquaintance 16 days before that on April 22nd. Obviously if the US is accurate, he can't be the father. But the tech said USs are accurate 5-8 days in 1st trimester. Let's assume worst case scenario and say it's off 8 days. That makes my conception April 30.

What would you say the chances are that he could be the father? Can sperm live 8 days? Again, this is assuming the ultrasound is that far off and sperm can survive 8 days.

The other guy I've been sleeping with I started before April 22nd and am still sleeping with him now. And yes, both men are aware of the situation.

All I can say is ladies...condoms aren't 100%.

I want the 2nd man to be the father and the 2nd man wants to be the father. The 1st man doesn't want to be. So it would be in everyone's best interests if the 1st man wasn't.

Obviously the 2nd man is more likely, but what are your predictions? I know you aren't magical and can't tell for sure, but I'm not asking for anyone to tell for sure, just to give it your best guess based on your knowledge of ultrasounds and how long sperm can live.

A test will be done on the baby once it's born, but the end of January is a long way to wait with that sort of worry. I'd at least like to have an idea so I can either calm down until then or brace myself with worry.

Oh, and LMP is useless for me. I take progesterone only BC, which along with being less reliable birth control, also makes your periods irregular.

Well, the "direct" answer is that by all evidence that it is possible to get from an ultrasound, it sounds like the first guy was too early to be in the running.  I don't think anyone is beating around the bush here.  You have as much precision as is possible from an ultrasound, and it looks like the first guy is pretty much ruled out.  But if you have the money and want absolute certainty, you could contact Ravgen or the DDC and get a prenatal paternity test, that would be a precise answer.

I just learned that dating ultrasounds are taken from weeks 10-14 in the UK, Australia, and Canada because they're the most accurate.

It drives me crazy that I can't get a direct answer!

I've heard that at 12 weeks, the margin for error is considered to be +/- 7 days.  Since at 6 weeks, it' about +/- 1 day, and by the end of pregnancy it's about +/- three weeks, I'd say you're safe to assume a margin for error of no more than +/- 9 days in your 13th week, and probably not even that.

Glad to hear some agreement that sperm can't live 8 days (I didn't think so) but what have you heard about ultrasound accuracy 13-14 weeks in?

I don't think the first guy got you pregnant.  Sperm doesn't live that long.

Healthy sperm can live up to seven days inside a canal kept at regular body temperature. Eight days would be pushing it honestly.

I would have to guess it was the second guy who got you pregnant. I mean I don't gamble much but if I had to put money on it mine would be lover number two.

Days apart...but I stopped with the first guy around April 22. Certainly not after, maybe even before. The second guy I was sleeping with the at the same time and never stopped.

Some scientists say 7 days, so I'm going with the higher one.
