Are ultrasounds reliable?

I have been struggling with what presented as right arm swelling/edema, redness, more fullness with right arm use and inflamed vein under arm.  I had an u/s done which thankfully came back negative and also had a ct with contrast of the arm showing clear arteries.  The symptoms have decreased over the last 3 weeks but that vein is still somewhat inflamed as is the bicep.  No localized redness or acute pain.  An xray was completed and showed clear lungs as well.  Orthopedic doc said is was probably a brachial plexus injury and prescribed Prednisone.  I guess my question is, could a clot have gotten missed?

I should add that the swelling and normalcy of arm color returns with arm elevation.
