Lung Problems and muscle atrophy

by Kavitronica, Apr 09, 2009 09:24AM
Hello,

My Mother is a 53yr old Caucasian woman. She is 5' 9" and weighs about 9st 2lb and is a smoker. Previous conditions include Breast Cancer, Collapsed Lungs.

Recently she has been complaining of shortness of breath when she's out walking our dog. She flagged this up to her GP who promptly referred her to the local Hospital for X-Rays and further examination. The results have come back and it shows damage to her lungs and muscle atrophy around her rib cage. She has been called back for further tests.

A few key things I'd like to know.. The cause for the muscle atrophy and the short/long term effects of such a condition? Also, is there anything that I could do to proactively help her moving forward?.. Are there any exercises she could do to help?..

I know one of the biggest things I can do right now is to support her in quitting smoking but if there is anything else you could recommend I'd be very grateful for your input.

Many Thanks,
Laura
