2 days after root canal done I see an infection

by ladyvegas, Oct 26, 2009 05:58PM
I had a root canal done on a Friday morning by an Endodontist.  The root was split and the tooth already had a crown on it.  The procedure took over two hours.  On Saturday I was very swollen and in moderate pain.  Swelling increased throughout the day and into Sunday.  I did call the Endodontist who gave me another prescription for penicillin.   I  had been on penicillin prior to the root canal because of infection.  Sunday night I noticed a ***** bump on the gum below the tooth.  It broke during the night and now the swelling has gone down but I am still in pain.  I went to the Endodontist today, Monday, and he just looked at the tooth and gave me a script for a different antibiotic.  Is this normal?  I thought maybe he would do an Xray or something.  I am concerned that this infection is not gone and will spread.

The antibiotics should help with the infection.  It may be that the bacteria is more resistant to the antibiotics that were prescribed.  As for the swelling, its fine that its popped and that the pus is discharged.  The body should be able to heal on its own.  An x-ray may not be necessary as he saw you recently and any changes would not show up on the x-ray immediately.  It takes awhile for changes in the jaw to occur and the x-ray would likely not show much change.  In a few months, you may need to take another x-ray to see if its healing or not.
