5 yo son growing tooth far back in mouth

My 5 year old son appears to be growing a tooth far back on the upper left. I am not even sure it appears to be in his gumline at all . It is not through, but it is white and hard like a tooth.

He already has 10 teeth on top and this is at least an inch and half behind the last tooth on the upper left.

Is this normal or should I have it checked out. What could cause this?

Just to be on the safe side, I would get it checked out.  If he doesn't have a tooth in the area and there is space for one, then it may just be a molar coming in crooked and will align itself.

Sorry, I just realized how old your son is, so he has all his baby teeth.  So, I would definitely get this checked out.  It sounds like it's a tooth, but "why" is what I would want to know.  If it turns out that he has "supernumerary Teeth", please contact me about this.

He saw his pediatrician for something unrelated today but I asked her what she thought. He was sick and I didn't want to take a sick kid to the dentist. She thinks that it's not a tooth but we were actually seeing a visible part of his jaw. I might still take him to the denist, just to make sure they feel its normal.

My God!  You should not be able to see part of his jaw!  I would definitely get him into a good dentist as soon as he feels well enough.
