A part of my tooth chipped off and the pain is gone now?!

For a while now, my back tooth has hurting a bit whenever I chewed in that area (I think there might've been a cavity there), but just today I was eating a bowl of cereal and a chunk of it just disappeared, and now I don't feel any pain there anymore. I didn't feel it in my mouth when I was eating, so I'm thinking i might have swallowed it, but now that its gone I don't feel any pain at all when I eat. I'm thinking it fixed itself, but I'm thinking of going to see a dentist for it. I'm worried that it might be a problem I need to get fixed.
