Am I In Need Of A Root Canal???

I am a habitual night grinder. I recently was grinding my teeth and the next day I noticed I had a broken back tooth. I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned and I asked the hygentist what she thought the dentist might do about it. She told me that since the chip wasn't bad that the dentist will probably just refill it. The dentist came in (my dentist's husband) and checked out the xrays and assured me that I would only need to get the tooth refilled.

About a month later I went back in to get a cavity filled. My dentist (the woman) told me that I would be in need of a root canal. She showed me the xray and explained to me why I did. THE TOOTH DOES NOT HURT. I don't see the need in going through all of this pain from the root canal for a tooth that can just be refilled.

Does anyone have any opinions or ideas on this?

Hi,
As a result of my firsthand experience with this subject, I would recommend going to an endodontist to advise and if necessary to perform the root canal on any back molar....

She showed me the xray. The cavity wasn't to the nerve yet, my nerve is not infected in any way.

I have to get a crown too, how is that uncomfortable?

I just had a root canal - often times the tooth doesn't hurt but if the nerve has been exposed or damaged, you need to have it because the risk of infection is too great.  Ask the dentist to show you on the xray why you need to have it done - sometimes there is a little cloud at the top of the nerve that shows an infection that you cannot feel.

Root canal is slightly more uncomfortable than a filling - take some motrin beforehand.  Otherwise it wasn't too bad.  Having a crown was way more uncomfortable.
