Anesthetics

by miss_shell, Jun 24, 2009 03:23PM
Hello,

I had wisdom extractions in feb 09 using carbocaine. The days following the procedure the lower right side of my face stayed numb and in pain. There was a knot in my cheek on my jaw line. (Lower Right side).

I went back to the dentist concerned i had an infection or something "in my socket". The dentist said the anesthetic sometimes takes longer in some people to wear off. I was still concerned bc it felt numb/sore for a while.

I started to feel some tenderness in the lower right side of my mouth last week (June 09) and scheduled a dentist appointment to have it checked out. I had a "puss pocket" or "abscess" in the lower right extraction site. When the dentist went to drain it, he first injected carbocaine or something to that effect, (more mild than Lidocaine). Instant pain and tears. Worst feeling ever. The dentist assumed it was from the infection and sore gums. I developed another knot in the same spot as i did with my extractions. Face/gum stayed numb and in more pain then before i went in for the abscess.

What could this be? I thought i was allergic to novacaine, but the dentist were not using novacaine. They used a lighter anesthetic than lidocaine (which i was suppose to be non allergic to). HOWEVER, KEEP IN MIND I HAD ALL 4 WISDOM TEETH EXTRACTED AT THE SAME TIME AND ONLY THE LOWER RIGHT SIDE OF MY MOUTH HAS HAD THIS ADVERSE EFFECT. MY DENTIST AND I ARE AT A LOSS. HOW DO I KNOW WHICH ANESTHETIC I AM ABLE TO USE NEXT TIME???

I don't think its the anesthetic that is causing the problem.  It may be some complication from the extraction area itself.

How is the area now?  Has it improved at all?  Did he prescribe any antibiotics?  Its unusual to have complications this many months after an extraction.  It may be a good idea to see an oral surgeon for a second opinion.
