Apicoectomy vs. Implants?

by SV8, Feb 28, 2009 03:22PM
I had a root canal (tooth #30) around 1998-99. I had an absess (abscess) in the same tooth (much pain, sudden onset when chewing food in Mar 2008) and had a retreatment root canal in Apr 2008. I went for a check-up to the endodontist in Nov 2008 and was told the absess (abscess) looks "bigger".  I was not having any pain at that time; however, since the second root canal, the jaw area around the tooth was "sore" off and on. Over the last week - Feb 19 2009 or so, I started having more frequent pain around the tooth area - again, off and on, but uncomfortable. I am not having any pain when chewing. I am a 47 yr. old female. I go to the dentist at least annually and often twice a year. I floss every evening. In general, I am in good health. No health issues - good blood work - determined from annual physicials. My question is -what factors should I consider in deciding whether to have an apicoectomy (save the tooth) or move forward with tooth extraction and bridge or implant.

I think consulting with an endodontist would be the best approach for a good answer.  You may also want to consult with your dentist as well.  An apicoectomy may resolve the problem but with a large abscess and a failed re-treatment recently, I would probably lean towards getting a bridge or implant if possible.
