Bad breath from crowns

Bad breath from crowns

For many years I did not realized that my bad breath is from the crowns. I have consulted over 15 dentists, orthodontists, ENTs( one of who recommended my tonsils removed), gastrointestinal specialist (with scopes, allergic testing) even a heart specialist, in case there something he knows. Besides all the traditional quacks.
Some deduced that I was over sensitive to extend of psycho while some were sympathetic but helpless.
The fact is the stench from the flossing of the crowns sides is bad as compare to the others.
Finally, the last orthodontist convinced me that it was due to the faulty, leaking crowns. I had them redone with porcelain ones. However, in less than 2 weeks, the smell came back. He being a reputable orthodontist here, had to honor his judgment, recommended a recapping. During the temporary or initial few days, I have not smell better. But in no time its back. He was so exasperated that he gave up and got his partners to take over the case, but to no avail.
I have used all kinds of flows and toothbrushes, tongue scrap, tiny brushes (Japan and French made) to brush in between. I was told by the last one to brush side to side to get at the debris, contrary to the up and down method. All these to no resolve. The fact is the stench from the floss ing of the crowns
I deduced that some people, due to their inherent saliva flow or body metabolism, cannot tolerate food debris which will inevitably be lodged between the crown and the root, gum based area.
I last saw 4 different dentists to have all the crowns and roots removed to replaced with dentures, but none would do it as the crowns as they said are beautiful.
The question is beauty cannot enhance my psychology as its depressing and you cannot talk with conviction as you know the other guy is so offended with the breath.
Guess the next one I should see is the shrink.

Vanni, no matter how well made the crowns would be they will inherently smell more than natural teeth. For one thing there is the interface between your tooth structure and the crown. Now we can make them really small , as littel as 40 microns, but still natural teeth don't have these.. the other, being the anatomy, I am sure your crowns ar great, but no matterhow beautiful they are never gonna be as good as your own god given tooth shape.
I had athought, have you ever tried Smartmouth products? you can find the mouthrinse and toothpaste in wallgreens if you have those there. these really wonderful products have a specific compound in them that breaks down VSCs, or volatile sulfur copounds, which are the terrible smell you hate so much.. try the rinse at bed time and I think you will find yourself a very easy and inexpensive solution to your problem. All the best.

Thanks for your advice, unfortunately in i cannot find the Smartmouth products here.
As a dental professional, you don't think its better for me to do away with the crowns and have dentures instead.

That would be absolutely out of question. Having hallitosis, does not constitute reasoning for full mouth extraction. Also I must mention, denture wearers implant or otherwise have their own set of bad breath problems..
Even if someone agrees to do that for you I would go as far as to say that would be a serious ethical breech.
If you can not get that product, where you are check their site http://www.smartmouth.com/
you maybe able to order over the net. the stuff really works.

I guess that is why the many dentist that I consulted would not do it. This problem has haunted me for so long, I think I am already physiologically impaired by it. My social life and career have been grossly undermined.
The smell and taste is evidently present and its not overreaction from me. The reaction of people is also conclusive, their sneezes, their polite or direct gesture to block their nose or their coughs to stop breathing all indicates.
I hope the dental faculty would come out with some some sort of evaluation on their patients if they would be suitable, before the recommendation of such dental work. You cannot imagine the agony and suffering one goes through.
Thanks, I will get my brother to buy the smartmouth products as he will be going to US soon.

Hi Vanni
I guess, while there are still good hearted dentist out there, like Hamidreza, majority dentist's goal is to make money. they certainly won't tell you the bad things before they made money. I am facing the same problem now. I have my molar (left lower) root canaled few days agao, I have to make restoration of the tooth. I guess I would onlay restoration, hopefully get rid of crown bad smell problem.

I paid $30,000.00 for a full mouth improperly placed oral recon resulting in TMD. My DDS intentionally drilled thru a newly crowned absessed molar rather than honor a free crown replacement. He sealed the necrotic void with metal amagam & offered no antibiotics.
I ended up on life support with septic shock, renal & respiratory failure. All my internal organs relocated outside my body.
It took years to recover but I always felt my mouth reeked of decay. My new DDS said everything was fine. He also stated he wanted $60,000.00 to reconstruct me.
I had 3 abcessed molars, one attached to the root.
I could've easily succombed to septic shock again.
My DDS's did'nt care if I lived or died.
I finally found a DDS who took a mirror & showed me the mass decay other DDS's ignored to line their pockets.
Seek the BEST and ask a lot of questions. Check their dept of professional regulations license in your state.
I am very lucky to be alive.
