Bone Graft needed due to past piercing

I need to know exactly what to expect when I get a bone graft done.  A previous tongue piercing caused some problem with my jaw and teeth. My dentist apparently said I will be awake for it and I don't understand why? He said it will be local anesthesia and I'd rather go under and be completely unaware of what's happening. Does anyone have experience with a dental bone graft and local anesthetic? What can I expect during and after procedure? What kind of medication is prescribed after for pain? Any suggestions on how to plan for this????
