Bridge or Partial

by Mozark, Dec 07, 2007 02:55AM
When I was 24 I had a four unit bridge placed in the top front to replace two teeth (number 9 and 10) that had been missing since I was 12 (pool horseplay). after 39 years, the bridge came loose and fell out. My dentist has told me that the two teeth that were holding the bridge (8 and 11) simply are not strong enough to support a bridge any longer (both have had root canals). He now wants to pull number 8, and bridge 6 through 12 (twelve is crowned already). He stated that numbers 7 and10 are not very strong teeth and recommends the eye teeth as anchors. However, number 11 was one of the teeth used in the original bridge and he feels that it too has suffered just too much tooth loss, due to cavities, that he wants to use number 12 as the anchor instead of 11. Basically, 6 & 7 and 11 and 12 will be the sacrified teeth and the four together will give me a good, strong bridge. My other thought is to just crown 8 and 11 and go back to a partial on 8 and 10, keeping it simple. I am 61 and I'm not sure I want to spend that kind of money on a bridge that will likely outlive me. How would you advise a patient here?
