Broken Tooth and possible infection

Five days ago I broke my tooth. Its the second to last back molar on my bottom jaw. It was in pretty bad shape and I was scheduled already for an appointment to get a root canal. I piece of it broke off and for the past 4 days there has been a swelling in my gums that has been increasing daily. There has also been a bad taste and it becomes very painful if I do not take Ibuprofine (sp?) and now my ear on the same side has been clogged up. Does anyone know what's the matter with my mouth?

When are you going to get your root canal done?  I would let your dentist know and try to get in as soon as possible to get it taken care of before it worsens.  Most likely the break in your tooth has exposed the tooth more bacteria and food buildup.  This is resulting in irritation in the gums as well as possibly having bacteria buildup in your canals.  The sooner you get it taken care of, the better as you'll prevent the bacteria from continuing to spread.
