Broken sutures and white film on gum 3 days after implant

by bawgden, Aug 30, 2009 06:16PM
Hi -- I got an implant placed where one of my molars used to be 3 and a half days ago. Tonight I rinsed my mouth with mouthwash and spat out the sutures that were placed to hold my gum in place over the implant. There is also a whitish coating on part the gum, which I initially assumed was a healing cap, but now am starting to believe is plaque. I don't want to pick at it for fear of making my situation worse. There is no bleeding -- the gum looks like it's healed, and the implant produces very mild discomfort, nothing like a tooth infection. I am however afraid of getting an infection and my bone eventually rejecting the implant as a result. I am seeing my doctor tomorrow afternoon, but meanwhile I wanted to know if this sounds like I have an implant-threatening infection, and if there's anything advisable to do in this situation.

I have tried to be extremely careful about my oral hygiene since the implant; the dentist advised me to brush gently around the implant spot, and to use an anti-bacterial mouthwash, both of which I did. I've also been on a soft-food diet, and have only eaten food at room temperature, and avoiding dairy as well (supposed to prevent the formation of blood clots). I'm also on anti-biotics and pain-killers, so I can't really tell if there's anything painful there. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Early loss of suture probably yields no significant consequence of osseointegration of implant, as long as flap is well adapted. Going back to your surgeon to have a follow up exam is advised.
