Burning Tongue, then lips and gums

by QuickPick, Jul 25, 2006 12:00AM
About 5 weeks ago I noticed either sides of my tongue were discolored and then a tingling, pin-pricks sensation begun. Then this discomfort began spreading. I noticed "pimple" like cluster under my upper lip. And this discomfort kept moving around my mouth (still does). My gums also appeared inflamed and have some white areas under the surface.

I went to the doctor, she prescribed me Peridex (?). She didn't want to give me any anti-biotic. There was no sign of fungus either. I've been really freaking out and also done a Herpes test (which came back negative).

The sensation of burning has moved today to the top of my tongue. This really concerns me since I didn't receive an actual diagnosis. My doctor mentioned something about my "mucosa" being affected.

Please advise (have photos if necessary).

I do not know how old you are, this can be hormonal in nature. I would strongly suggest that you consult an oral surgeon for a more definitive diagnosis. From your description I do not think it is serious but I am sure it is disconcerting until you find out what it is.

Thanks for the reply. No, I didn't have any dental work done recently. The last time I was at the dentist was about 18 months ago. I don't know if this is allergy, but I guess it's a possibility. I do not have any allergies (as far as I know), but I know those can develop later in life...

Like another person I was just reading about, I had the same thing happen.  I started out with an area on the side of my tongue that had a burning sensation, then it spread under my lip and cheek area and across the palate.  I have bumps across my palate that do not seem to go away.  Some days seem worse than others.  I have had basic labs done, a colonoscopy, endoscopy, and swabs to test for thrush and bacteria.  Everything comes back normal.  They keep saying that it is geographic tongue.  I disagree, because my mouth and gums burn.  Please give me some advie!

It could be geographic tongue. There are a number of variants of the condition, and the symptoms you describe are very common amongst sufferers. Start looking at your diet: if you think you are taking essential vitamins, either through supplements or your food, are you still ABSORBING them? The tongue is an accurate indicator that our bodies are lacking something they need.
