Can 7th tooth replace 6th tooth (decayed) after extraction

I have a normal 7th tooth, a severely decayed 6th tooth and an impacted 8th tooth which grows to the direction of the root of the 7th tooth. A dentist told me to extract my 6th tooth and he can push the 7th tooth into the place of 6th tooth for later wisdom tooth (I did not mention the wisdom-8th tooth with him). Then, in such case, I thought may be the wisdom tooth can have a place to grow up.
I'm wondering if the act of "pushing" the 7th tooth to replace the 6th tooth is possible? How long would it usually takes? (Few months or a year?)
The dentist is on a trip right now so I will wait him to come back to ask, but I want to see if anyone has been through such case? Does it hurt?
